Chapter 2 - The Evidence in the Attic

Dad lunged forward, slamming both fists onto the table so hard the crystal water goblets rattled and tipped over. ""Get out of my house! Both of you! Malcolm, take your fraudulent paperwork and get off my property before I call the local police for trespassing and harassment!""
Malcolm didn't even blink. He calmly took a sip of ice water, set the glass down with precision, and pulled out a sleek silver tablet from his briefcase. ""I wouldn't advise dialing law enforcement, Arthur. You see, when Evelyn contacted my firm last week after discovering the unauthorized occupants at Lake Oconee, we initiated an immediate forensic discovery audit into the Cross family estate accounts.""
He slid the tablet across the table so Dad, Mom, and Belle could clearly see the illuminated screen. It displayed a high-resolution scan of my grandfather's handwritten holographic will, alongside bank transfer logs detailing wire routing numbers originating from an offshore holding trust.
""What is that?"" Dad stammered, the aggressive color instantly draining from his face, replaced by a pasty, sickly gray.
""That,"" Malcolm stated plainly, ""is the proof that this home—this very suburban residence we are standing in right now—was purchased using distributions from the Cross Family Legacy Trust. A trust created by your late father, George Cross. Under the explicit bylaws of that trust, full custodial authority and real property title revert exclusively to the oldest living grandson upon his twenty-fifth birthday if the trustees engage in fiscal malfeasance or breach of fiduciary duty.""
My mind spun. I had turned twenty-five eight months ago. During that exact week, I had been shivering under a thin fleece blanket in the back seat of my dented 2008 Honda Civic, rationing cans of black beans and heating water on a miniature camping stove behind an abandoned strip mall. My father had called me on my birthday only to tell me I was a disappointment who would never amount to anything.
""You stole Grandfather George's money too?"" I asked, my voice barely audible above the hum of the refrigerator.
Grandma Evelyn looked at me, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. ""Your grandfather adored you, Zaden. Before he passed away seven years ago, he knew your father’s greed and reckless spending habits would eventually ruin the family. George entrusted me with the oversight, but your father used forged power-of-attorney documents while I was receiving cancer treatments in Zurich three years ago. He convinced the probate court that I was incapacitated.""
""I took care of you!"" Mom cried out defensively. ""We managed your finances so you wouldn't have to worry while you were sick! Arthur worked tirelessly!""
""You isolated me in a Swiss clinic and screened my mail,"" Grandma Evelyn retorted, her voice shaking with righteous fury. ""You told me Zaden had joined an extremist commune on the West Coast and had legally changed his name to sever ties with the family. You told me he cursed my name and refused every letter, every card, and every single dividend check I sent him!""
I felt a sudden, suffocating tightness in my throat. ""Grandma... I used to write you letters every single Christmas. I sent them to Dad’s house because he told me your overseas address was confidential due to medical privacy laws.""
Malcolm clicked a button on the tablet, bringing up digital photographs of a cardboard storage bin. ""We executed a court-sanctioned preservation subpoena on the Cross storage unit in downtown Atlanta yesterday afternoon. Inside trunk number fourteen, our forensic investigators discovered over forty-eight unopened letters addressed to Mrs. Evelyn Cross, written in Zaden’s handwriting, dated between 2023 and 2026. Along with them were hundreds of thousands of dollars in uncashed cashier's checks issued directly to Zaden by the George Cross Estate.""
Belle buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking violently. Logan stepped back from his wife, his expression twisting from arrogant indignation to cold self-preservation. ""Belle... you told me that money was an early inheritance. You swore on your life your brother signed off on every single dollar of that seed capital for my firm.""
""Logan, please, don't do this here,"" Belle sobbed, reaching out for his sleeve.
Logan pulled his arm away violently, as if her touch were toxic. ""If my name is on those corporate shell filings, Arthur, I swear to God I will testify against both of you to save my own skin. I have a professional license to protect!""

""Shut your mouth, Logan!"" Dad roared, but the authority had completely vanished from his voice. He looked cornered, trapped, and utterly defeated.
""No, Arthur, keep talking,"" Grandma Evelyn said, motioning toward the door. ""Because every word uttered in this room is being documented for the district attorney. Zaden, grab your jacket. We are leaving this house of vipers. You have an estate to inspect.""
