Chapter 8 - Cleaning House

The following two weeks were a whirlwind of radical transformation, intense legal maneuvering, and profound catharsis. Malcolm and his team moved with ruthless efficiency through every layer of the Cross family’s financial footprint. Because the trust documents granted me sole authority in the event of trustee malfeasance, I was legally appointed as the sole executor and primary beneficiary of the George Cross Legacy Trust.
Our first order of business was reclaiming the family home in Atlanta. Under the terms of the emergency federal receivership, Mom and Belle were given seventy-two hours to pack their purely personal effects—clothing and basic personal hygiene items—and vacate the premises.
I stood on the front lawn of the suburban house I had grown up in, watching two commercial moving vans loading up the remnants of their extravagant lives. Mom stood by the curb, clutching a small suitcase, weeping endlessly. Her luxury designer handbags, her diamond jewelry, and her sports car had all been seized by court-appointed marshals to satisfy the immediate civil restitution claims against Arthur's estate.
""Zaden,"" Mom sobbed, reaching out toward me as I approached. ""Where am I supposed to go? Belle's in-laws have disowned her, Logan is in federal custody, and we have no money for a hotel! How can you be so cruel to your own mother?""
""Cruel?"" I asked, looking at her without an ounce of hatred, only profound exhaustion. ""Mom, when I called you last January from a payphone in the freezing rain, begging for fifty dollars to buy an alternator so my car’s heater would work, what did you tell me?""
Mom swallowed hard, unable to meet my eyes.
""You told me that giving me money would only enable my laziness,"" I said, my voice quiet but cutting deep. ""You told me that suffering builds character, and then you hung up and went to a charity gala with Belle. Grandma has generously agreed to pay for a modest one-bedroom apartment rental for you for six months. After that, you will need to find employment. You are physically capable of working, and it’s time you learned the character you so eagerly preached to me.""
Belle emerged from the front doors carrying two duffel bags, her face pale, completely devoid of pride. Her marriage to Logan was over, her social standing in Atlanta was entirely annihilated, and the state licensing board had already initiated proceedings to revoke her real estate license for complicity in the fraudulent transfers.
""Zaden,"" she whispered, her voice cracking. ""Will you ever forgive us?""
""Forgiveness requires genuine repentance, Belle,"" I replied calmly. ""And so far, you have only shown remorse for getting caught. Goodbye.""

Without waiting for a response, I turned my back on them and walked away. Within an hour, the moving trucks were gone, the keys were surrendered to Malcolm, and a private security team locked down the perimeter. The house would be sold at fair market value, with every cent of the proceeds routed directly into an escrow account to fully clear the fraudulent debts attached to my credit report.
By the end of that week, Malcolm presented me with a certified letter from the major credit reporting bureaus: every single unauthorized loan, collection account, and default lien had been completely expunged from my permanent record. My credit score was restored to an immaculate 810. For the first time in three agonizing years, my name was clean.
