Chapter 9 - The Healer's Touch

Twenty-four hours later, the penthouse atop the Toscano tower was completely silent, secured by three rings of heavily armed guards loyal to the bone. The syndicate war was over before the sunrise had even reached the skyline. The Ferrante faction had collapsed without firing another bullet, swallowed whole by the Toscano machine. In the master bedroom overlooking Lake Michigan, Nico lay propped against a stack of pillows, the dressing across his shoulder freshly changed by the private family surgeon. The sun was setting over the water, painting the room in deep hues of amber and gold. I walked in, carrying a cup of black coffee, wearing an oversized silk robe that belonged to him. I sat on the edge of the bed, handing him the mug. Nico took it with his uninjured hand, his dark eyes never leaving my face. ""Your father accepted exile to a remote facility in South America,"" Nico said quietly. ""He will never set foot on this continent again. You are entirely safe, Chiara. The Ferrante name has been retired."" I looked down at my hands. For twenty-four years, I had held my breath, waiting for the executioner's axe to fall. Now, the air tasted clean, sweet, and infinite. ""I spent my whole life being an asset,"" I said softly. ""A trade piece. I thought marriage meant trading one prison for another."" Nico set the coffee mug aside on the nightstand. With slow deliberation, he reached out, tangling his long, warm fingers with mine, pulling me gently until I was sitting close enough to feel the heat radiating from his chest. ""When I saw you in Milan seven years ago, I didn't see an asset,"" he said, his voice dropping into that deep, hypnotic baritone that made my pulse race. ""I saw a girl standing in the rain, staring down the darkest evil in this city without flinching. I made a promise to myself that night: one day, I would become powerful enough to tear down the walls your father built around you."" My breath caught. ""You orchestrated the entire peace treaty... just for me?"" ""I ended a three-year war to bring you here,"" Nico admitted, his thumb caressing the sensitive skin of my wrist. ""Not to own you. Not to rule you. But because I wanted an equal. A queen who looks at the dark and doesn't run."" I leaned forward, my heart beating frantically against my ribs, the last defensive walls around my heart crumbling into dust. ""And what if your queen wants more than just a political partnership?"" Nico’s eyes darkened with raw, possessive fire. ""Then tell me what she wants,"" he whispered against my lips. ""Her husband,"" I murmured, and closed the distance between us.
