Chapter 7 - The Father's Price

The silence that descended upon the council chamber was heavier than a tombstone. The five family elders—men who lived by a brutal, unyielding code of honor that strictly forbade the slaughter of an innocent bride during a consecrated peace treaty—looked at my father with pure, unadulterated disgust. ""You tried to butcher your own blood on consecrated ground, Aldo?"" Don Moretti, the oldest don at the table, spat on the floor. ""You broke the centuries-old sanctuary oath."" Aldo didn't look at Moretti. He looked at me, his eyes flaring with the venomous rage of a master who had been outplayed by his pet. ""Chiara,"" Aldo snarled, taking a step toward me, his hands trembling. ""You ungrateful little viper. I gave you life! I clothed you in couture, gave you an education, gave you the Toscano name!"" ""You gave me away as bait,"" I replied, my voice steady, ringing clear and cold through the ballroom. I raised my weapon, the sight centered perfectly between my father's eyes. My hands did not shake. ""You told me from the day my mother died that I was nothing more than an instrument. You thought I'd die quietly in that bridal suite so you could steal Nico's ports."" ""Chiara, lower the gun,"" Aldo ordered, attempting to invoke the psychological leash he had held over me for twenty-four years. ""You are a Ferrante. You don't turn on your own blood for a Toscano savage!"" Nico stepped forward, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with me, his presence an immovable wall of dark authority. He laid the platinum Toscano seal squarely in the center of the mahogany table with a resounding thud. ""She isn't a Ferrante anymore, Aldo,"" Nico said, his voice dripping with lethal finality. ""She carries my ring. She carries my name. And under the council laws of this city, an attack against my wife is an act of war against every Toscano living and dead."" Marco, cornered like a rabid rat, suddenly pulled a concealed derringer from his sling, aiming straight at my heart. ""If I'm burning, you're coming with me, bitch!"" Nico didn't hesitate. He stepped directly into the line of fire, wrapping his massive frame around mine as two gunshots exploded simultaneously. Marco’s bullet caught Nico in the shoulder, but Nico’s return fire caught Marco directly in the chest. Marco collapsed backward over the council table, overturning crystal decanters before sliding lifelessly to the floor. Nico grunted, a fresh bloom of dark blood soaking through his black tactical shirt, but his grip on me never wavered. ""Are you hit?"" he demanded instantly, his hands frantically searching my body for wounds, completely ignoring the bullet lodged in his own shoulder. ""Chiara, look at me. Are you hit?"" ""I'm fine,"" I gasped, looking at the blood on his chest, terror seizing my heart for reasons that had nothing to do with fear of dying. ""Nico, you're bleeding—"" ""I don't care,"" he snarled fiercely, his eyes blazing down into mine with wild possessiveness. ""As long as you're breathing, nothing else matters.""
