Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Queen

Six months later, the Grand Ballroom of the Toscano estate was filled once again, but the atmosphere was completely transformed. No masks. No false smiles. No cheap bourbon or hidden daggers. The grand reception that had been stolen from us had been reborn into an empire's coronation. Hundreds of the most influential figures in the country stood beneath the vaulted chandeliers, raising crystal glasses of champagne toward the grand terrace. I stood beside Nico, dressed in a breathtaking, custom-fitted emerald gown that accentuated every curve, the emeralds at my throat glittering under the lights. My hand rested securely in his, fingers intertwined. On my finger sat not just a wedding ring, but the Toscano family signet, forged in platinum, identical to the one Nico wore on his pinky. We were no longer Don and captive bride; we were sovereign rulers of an undisputed kingdom. Nico leaned down, his lips brushing against my ear, the familiar scent of cedar and expensive cologne wrapping around me like a shield. ""You're distracting the delegates, Donna Toscano,"" he whispered playfully, his hand settling possessively against the curve of my waist. ""Let them look,"" I smiled, turning my face to meet his gaze, entirely unapologetic. ""They need to know who signs the checks and who clears the supply routes."" Nico laughed—a genuine, rich sound that had once seemed impossible for the cold, unfeeling ghost of the mafia underworld. He looked down at me with an adoration that was as terrifying as it was tender. ""You took half my territory, Chiara."" ""I saved your life twice and reorganized your logistics to increase profits by twenty percent,"" I countered, tapping his lapel. ""You got a bargain, Toscano."" ""I got everything I ever wanted,"" he answered softly, his expression turning serious, his eyes drinking me in as if I were the only living soul in the crowded hall. Below the terrace, the city stretched out before us, peaceful and illuminated by thousands of dancing lights along the river. The war was over. The traitors were buried. And the girl who had once stood terrified in an alleyway now stood beside the man who had torn down the world just to build her a throne. Nico lifted his glass to mine, the crystal ringing clear in the warm night air. ""To the treaty,"" he said, his eyes promising a lifetime of devotion. I smiled, leaning up on my toes to press a passionate, lingering kiss to his lips before the entire city. ""To us."""
