Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the Suite

The room grew impossibly cold the second Nico Toscano uttered those two words. ""I know."" The heavy velvet drapes muffling the Chicago night suddenly felt like a burial shroud rather than the trappings of an empire. I kept my chin lifted, the cathedral-length lace of my veil pooled on the floor like spilled foam around my designer heels. My father had beaten one rule into my bones: when a gun is pointed at your spine, you smile and fix your posture. Nico wasn’t holding a weapon, but his eyes carried the exact same lethal trajectory. He leaned against the mahogany mantel, his tall frame cutting a terrifying, statuesque silhouette against the flickering fireplace. Seven years ago in Milan, I was just a pawn’s daughter trying to survive. Seeing my uncle put a bullet into an innocent broker’s throat had rewritten my reality overnight. I had stayed silent because speaking meant an early grave. Yet here was Nico, tracing the ghost of my past as if reading a ledger. He stepped closer, the sharp scent of cedarwood, rain, and cold iron rolling off him. The faint scar trailing across his jaw twitched as he appraised my wedding gown. ""Your father thinks he bought an empire with your virginity, Chiara,"" Nico said, his voice dropping to a gravelly baritone that vibrated straight through my ribs. ""He thinks he traded a docile daughter to guarantee his northern supply lines."" I let out a sharp, humorless chuckle. ""My father doesn't know the difference between a daughter and an asset. If you expect tears, you married the wrong girl."" Nico’s dark eyes locked onto mine, unblinking, dangerous. ""Good. Because tears don't stop bullets, and tonight, your father just signed our mutual death warrant."" He reached into his tuxedo breast pocket, pulling out a small brass burner phone and sliding it across the table beside the Milan photograph. The screen lit up instantly with a single, unread message: The decoy failed. Terminate the bride before dawn. My blood ran ice-cold. Marco hadn't just stepped in as a drunken substitute groom at the altar; he was sent to ruin me before the hit squad arrived. I stared down at the text, the brutal truth slamming into my chest. ""Marco wasn't just testing me,"" I whispered, connecting the dots as adrenaline flooded my veins. ""He was stalling me."" Nico unbuttoned his cuffs with eerie calmness, turning toward the double mahogany doors. ""Your father never wanted peace, little bird. He wanted the Toscano territory without firing a formal shot. You were never meant to survive the honeymoon."" Outside, the faint, unmistakable chirp of a silenced pistol echoed through the courtyard below. The siege had begun.
