Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

We moved through the abandoned subway catacombs under the Chicago Loop like two predators stalking through an abyss. The damp air hung heavy with the smell of iron rust and standing water. Every few yards, Nico paused, his hand lightly touching the small of my back to signal a stop while he swept the darkness with night-vision optics. His protective instinct was fierce, yet he treated me not as baggage to carry, but as a lethal partner covering his six. We crouched in an alcove beneath the Grand Sovereign’s foundation while a foot patrol passed above our heads on the grate, their boots ringing out against the iron. Nico leaned down, his lips brushing against my temple to whisper without making a sound. ""Once we breach the sub-level elevator, we have three minutes before the backup generators lock down the executive floor. Marco has the Corvin snipers positioned on the rooftops. If we trigger the alarm too early, we'll be boxed in."" ""I took down the primary alarm codes two years ago when my father attended the annual winter summit,"" I whispered back, our faces centimeters apart. In the gloom, his dark eyes glittered with an emotion far more dangerous than hostility. ""You've been planning for a war your whole life, haven't you?"" he breathed, his hand coming to rest on my hip, steadying me as we navigated the slippery ledge. ""I was planning my escape, Nico. In my family, women don't get to retire. We get married off to monsters or put in graves when we learn too much. I was building an exit strategy since I turned eighteen."" Nico went still. His hand tightened slightly on my hip, pulling me closer against his chest. ""I’m not your father, Chiara. And I don’t keep prisoners."" ""You bought me with a wedding ring,"" I challenged softly, staring directly into his soul. ""I didn't buy you,"" Nico growled, his voice a low rumble that resonated through the dark cavern. ""I demanded you. Your father wanted to offer his younger sister or cash. I told him the war ended only if Chiara Ferrante walked down that aisle."" My heart hammered violently against my ribs, knocking the air from my chest. ""Why?"" He held my gaze for a heartbeat that stretched into eternity, the coldness in his demeanor cracking just enough to reveal raw, burning obsession. ""Because seven years ago in Milan, I saw a girl who chose justice over her family's twisted loyalty. I’ve spent seven years waiting for the moment I could pull you out of their viper's nest."" Before I could process his words, the emergency sirens began to wail through the tunnel. Marco had initiated the council lockdown. Our window had just slammed shut.
