Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

""He played his hand too early,"" Nico muttered, staring at the radio transmitter as his fingers drummed a lethal rhythm on the table. ""Marco was always impatient. That’s why he never earned the crown."" I leaned over the map spread across the wooden surface, tracing the routes leading toward the downtown council hall. ""He thinks he has the support of the five families because my father is backing him. If they certify his succession at midnight, every resource your family owns transfers to his name legally under the syndicate charter. You become an outlaw in your own city."" Nico looked up at me, a wolfish smirk touching his scarred lips. ""You know the charter."" ""My father made me memorize every line of our bylaws so I could negotiate contracts for him without embarrassing the family name,"" I said, meeting his gaze squarely. ""Article Nine: a challenge to succession can only be settled in blood before the full council, or by the legal spouse producing the original family seal."" Nico’s smile widened, sharp and perilous. He reached up, grasping the heavy silver medallion hanging from a thick chain around his neck, tucked beneath his collar. The Toscano crest was stamped in pure platinum, etched with ancient Latin. ""He doesn't have the seal. But getting into that council room through front security is impossible. There will be forty armed guards loyal to Marco and your father surrounding the building."" ""Then we don't go through the front,"" I countered, tapping a small dot on the blue-printed schematic of the historic Grand Sovereign Hotel where the syndicate council convened. ""The service tunnels under the old ballroom connect to the refrigeration lines. My uncle used them to smuggle uncut diamonds twenty years ago. The blueprints are outdated, which means Marco’s security sweep will ignore them."" Nico stared at me, the air between us crackling with an undeniable, intoxicating electricity. He stood up, closing the distance between us until his broad shoulders blocked out the harsh fluorescent light above. His gloved hand reached out, his thumb gently wiping a smear of soot from my cheekbone. The touch sent a violent shiver cascading down my spine. ""You were supposed to be my weakness, Chiara,"" he murmured, his gaze dropping to my mouth for one heart-stopping second before snapping back to my eyes. ""They gave you to me thinking you’d be a knife in my back. Instead, you're the sharpest weapon I have."" I caught his wrist, feeling the thunderous beat of his pulse beneath his leather watchband. ""Then use me, Don Toscano. Because when we walk into that room, I want to be the one who looks my father in the eye when his empire burns.""
