Chapter 8 - The Final Confrontation

The wind howled through the shattered French doors, driving freezing snow across the oriental rug.

Gabriel’s hand shook violently, the barrel of the revolver wavering between Elias’s forehead and Nora’s chest.

"You took everything from me!" Gabriel raged, tears of humiliation and madness spilling down his pale cheeks.

"My docks, my money, my reputation! You turned the whole city against me in a single night!"

"You gave those things away, Gabriel," Nora said, stepping out from behind Elias’s shoulder so she stood in plain sight.

"Nora, get back," Elias commanded in a low whisper, his muscles coiled to lunge.

"No, Elias," Nora replied firmly. "He needs to hear this from me."

She took one slow, deliberate step toward her husband, her eyes holding his with absolute, unflinching clarity.

"You didn't lose your empire because of me, Gabriel. You lost it because you were so terrified of being ordinary that you betrayed everyone who ever cared about you."

Gabriel’s breath hitched, the gun trembling so hard it rattled against his knuckles.

"I loved you, Nora," Gabriel choked out, his voice cracking with desperate, pathetic self-pity. "In my own way, I gave you the world."

"You didn't give me the world, Gabriel," Nora said softly, taking another step forward until she was barely five feet from the barrel of the gun.

"You gave me a golden cage and expected me to sing while you paraded other women in front of my face."

"Stop talking!" Gabriel screamed, cocking the heavy hammer of the revolver with a sharp, mechanical click.

"Shoot, then," Nora said, her voice dropping into a whisper that carried over the sound of the howling blizzard.

"Prove to everyone that you were never a leader, never a businessman, and never a husband. Prove that you were just a bully who couldn't handle hearing the word 'no.'"

Gabriel stared at her, his eyes searching her face for the familiar terror that had comforted him for five years.

He found nothing.

There were no tears, no pleading, and no trembling knees.

There was only a woman who had completely outgrown him.

A sob tore from Gabriel’s throat as the reality of his utter irrelevance broke his spirit completely.

His arm sagged, the heavy revolver pointing down toward the floorboards.

In that split second of hesitation, Elias closed the distance like a striking cobra.

He struck Gabriel’s wrist with the edge of his hand, sending the revolver spinning across the hardwood into the fireplace hearth.

Before Gabriel could react, Elias drove him face-first into the floor, pinning his arm behind his back with an iron grip that elicited a sharp cry of agony.

Heavy footsteps pounded into the library as state troopers and federal marshals, led by Captain Miller, flooded the room with tactical shotguns drawn.

"Suspect is secured!" Miller shouted, kneeling to slip heavy steel handcuffs around Gabriel’s bruised wrists.

Gabriel looked up from the floor, his cheek pressed against the cold, snowy wood, his eyes meeting Nora’s one last time.

"Nora... please..." Gabriel whispered, broken and defeated.

Nora didn't answer.

She turned her back on him and walked toward the fireplace, warming her hands against the crackling flames as the officers dragged Gabriel out into the freezing night.
