Chapter 2 - Cold Reckoning

The heavy reinforced door of the loft buckled with a deafening screech of tearing hinges.

Wood splinters and drywall dust exploded inward as three of Gabriel’s men stormed through the threshold, weapons raised.

Before the first gunman could acquire a target, Elias moved with devastating, surgical precision.

He fired two rapid shots, disabling the lead enforcer's knee and sending him crashing hard into the hardwood floor.

The second man lunged forward with a tactical shotgun, but Elias stepped inside the guard's reach, deflecting the barrel upward into the plaster ceiling.

A deafening blast shattered the light fixtures overhead, showering the room in sparks and plaster dust.

Elias drove a brutal elbow into the man’s throat, stripping the weapon in a single fluid motion and throwing him backward into the corridor.

"Hold your fire!" Gabriel’s furious voice cut through the gunfire and groans of his wounded men.

Gabriel stepped through the shattered doorway, stepping over his fallen guards without sparing them a single glance.

His eyes swept the dimly lit loft, locking onto the open window and the empty room where Nora had been standing only minutes before.

"Where is she?" Gabriel hissed, his hands balled into tight fists, his breathing ragged and uneven.

Elias stood behind the solid kitchen island, his pistol lowered but resting securely in his grip.

"She’s somewhere you will never reach again, Gabriel," Elias said, his voice entirely devoid of panic.

Gabriel stepped forward, his polished dress shoes crunching over broken glass and debris.

"She is my wife!" Gabriel spat, veins bulging along his neck. "She belongs in my house! She signed an agreement that binds her family to mine for life!"

"You broke that agreement the moment you paraded another woman across the gala floor," Elias replied evenly. "Nora didn't just walk away from you tonight. She dismantled your empire before you even finished your first drink."

Arthur Bell entered the ruined doorway behind Gabriel, clutching a glowing smartphone to his ear.

His face was ashen, his hands shaking slightly as he lowered the device.

"Gabriel," Arthur said, his voice strained and tight with alarm. "We need to leave right now."

"Shut up, Arthur!" Gabriel snapped without looking back. "Search the building! Check every closet, every fire escape!"

"Gabriel, listen to me!" Arthur shouted, breaking his customary professional composure for the first time in twelve years. "The police aren't coming because the federal marshals just raided our south terminal! They have search warrants signed by Judge Harrison three hours ago!"

Gabriel froze, the blood draining from his face until he looked like a marble statue in the moonlight.

"Harrison is on my payroll," Gabriel whispered, his voice cracking with sudden disbelief.

"Not anymore," Elias said coldly. "Harrison was appointed by Nora’s grandfather thirty years ago. Did you really think you could buy off men whose loyalty was cemented before you were born?"

Gabriel’s eyes darted between Elias and Arthur, the horrifying realization finally dawning behind his arrogant facade.

Every move he had made tonight had been predicted, anticipated, and turned against him like a razor-sharp blade.

"She planned this," Gabriel breathed, his chest heaving as rage gave way to sheer, unadulterated panic. "From the very beginning. She played me."

"No, Gabriel," Elias said, taking a slow step toward the window. "You played yourself. You assumed her grace was weakness, and you mistook her patience for submission."

A chorus of federal sirens began wailing in the distance, their high-pitched cries cutting through the winter storm.

Red and blue emergency lights flashed against the snowy alleyway walls below, painting the loft in bleeding shades of crimson.

"Boss, we have to move out the back immediately or we're trapped," Arthur urged, grabbing Gabriel’s tailored coat sleeve.

Gabriel looked at Elias one last time, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth nearly shattered.

"This isn't over, Reed," Gabriel snarled, backing toward the splintered doorway. "Tell my wife that I will burn this entire city to the ground before I let her walk away with my name."

"Your name isn't worth what you think it is, Gabriel," Elias answered quietly as the sirens grew deafening outside.
