Chapter 10 - The Scarlet Promise

That evening, the grand reopening of the Grand Meridian Hotel was the most anticipated event of the summer social season.
Searchlights swept across the clear night sky, illuminating hundreds of photographers and reporters gathered along West Seventy-Fourth Street.
Inside the ballroom, the crystal chandeliers burned with brilliant, radiant light, reflecting off polished marble floors and towering arrangements of fresh red roses.
The room was filled with politicians, international ambassadors, and business leaders, but the suffocating atmosphere of fear that had once ruled the room was entirely gone.
At the top of the grand marble staircase, the double doors swung open.
Nora stepped onto the landing, and the entire ballroom fell into an awed, admiring hush.
She wore a breathtaking crimson gown that flowed behind her like liquid flame, its design modern, bold, and entirely magnificent.
Her dark hair cascaded over bare, sun-kissed shoulders, and her smile was radiant with genuine happiness and unshakeable confidence.
Beside her stood Elias Reed, looking strikingly handsome in a classic midnight-blue tuxedo, his eyes fixed on Nora with boundless pride.
Nora looked at the five hundred guests gathered below, recognizing many of the same faces who had watched her husband parade his mistress in this very room six months ago.
This time, there was no pity, no whispering, and no shame.
There was only profound respect.
"Are you nervous?" Elias whispered, leaning close so his breath brushed her ear.
Nora looked down at her hands, which rested lightly on his arm.
They were completely still.
"Not even a little," Nora smiled, her hazel eyes dancing with joy.
Together, they descended the grand staircase, their steps rhythmic and effortless as the orchestra swelled into a triumphant, romantic melody.
Guests parted before them with genuine smiles, applauding softly as the new leaders of the city’s commerce reached the center of the dance floor.
Thomas Vance stood near the orchestra, raising his champagne flute toward his daughter with eyes glistening with proud tears.
Elias turned to Nora, offering his hand with a deep, courtly bow.
"May I have this dance, Miss Vance?"
Nora placed her hand in his, feeling the strong, steady warmth of his fingers intertwining with hers.
"I thought you'd never ask, Mr. Reed," she whispered.
He pulled her close, his arm encircling her waist with effortless strength as they moved across the polished floor in a sweeping, graceful waltz.
The crimson silk of her gown swirled around them like a beacon of triumph, capturing every eye in the room.
"Do you remember what you asked me the night of the winter gala?" Elias murmured as he turned her beneath the sparkling chandeliers.
Nora looked up into his pale blue eyes, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep it took her breath away.
"I asked you why you really came back."
Elias smiled, a brilliant, breathtaking expression that transformed his rugged face completely.
He reached into his breast pocket and produced a small, velvet box, snapping it open to reveal a magnificent crimson ruby surrounded by a halo of brilliant diamonds.
"I didn't come back to save your family's docks, Nora," Elias confessed, his voice filled with tender, unyielding devotion.
"I came back because I have loved you since the day we met, and I promised myself I would wait until you were free to choose who stood beside you."
The orchestra reached its crescendo, the notes soaring toward the gilded ceiling as tears of pure happiness welled in Nora’s eyes.
She looked at the ring, then at the man who had stood between her and the abyss without asking for anything in return.
"I choose you, Elias," Nora whispered, her voice carrying through the music with absolute certainty. "Now and forever."
May you like
Elias slid the ring onto her finger, lifting her hand to his lips in a tender, lingering kiss as the entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, joyous applause.
Standing in the center of the room that was meant to be her tomb, Nora Hale smiled into the future, wrapped in scarlet, surrounded by light, and finally, completely free.
