Chapter 1 - The Trap in the Alley

The shadows in the loft deepened the moment the overhead fixtures died. Outside, the freezing rain turned into a biting, relentless sleet that tapped like frantic fingernails against the double-paned glass.

Nora dropped to her knees on the cold hardwood floor, clutching the hem of her crimson silk gown. Her chest heaved, every breath burning her throat as the heavy hum of idling engines vibrated through the floorboards.

"Stay down, and do not make a sound," Elias whispered, his voice steady despite the chaos unfolding outside. He knelt beside her, his hand pressing gently against her shoulder blade to keep her low.

Down in the alleyway, car doors slammed in violent succession. Four heavy black SUVs blocked both ends of the narrow cobblestone passage, their high beams cutting through the swirling sleet.

Nora peeked over the low windowsill, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Gabriel stepped directly into the glaring halogen headlights, his tuxedo coat open to the wind and snow. His dark hair was disheveled, plastered against his forehead, and his silver cuff links caught the harsh white glare.

He was flanked by eight men, their heavy wool coats bulging with concealed firearms. Behind him stood Arthur Bell, whose face was pale and grim as he stared up at the third-story windows.

"Nora!" Gabriel’s voice echoed off the damp brick walls of the alley, raw and distorted by fury. "I know you're up there! Stop this childish circus and come down before I tear this building apart brick by brick!"

Nora shivered, but not from the cold draft leaking through the window frames.

For five long years, that voice had commanded her entire existence, dictating what she wore, where she went, and how quietly she breathed. Hearing it now, stripped of its polished boardroom charm, sent an instinctive jolt of terror through her veins.

Elias moved like liquid shadow toward the steel security cabinet concealed behind the bookshelf.

He pulled out two tactical pistols, checking the magazines with quiet, practiced competence before sliding one into his waist holster.

"He found us faster than I anticipated," Elias murmured, his pale eyes tracking the movement below. "Arthur must have tracked my vehicle's transponder from the gala garage."

Nora’s stomach twisted with sudden guilt.

"I brought this to your doorstep, Elias," she whispered, her hands trembling as she smoothed the red silk over her knees. "He won't stop until he destroys everything you've rebuilt."

Elias turned, looking down at her in the dim moonlight filtering through the skylight.

A ghost of a smile touched his lips, hard and utterly fearless.

"Gabriel didn't bring enough men to destroy anything tonight, Nora," Elias said softly. "He thinks he's cornering a frightened wife. He forgot who built this city's underground."

Down below, the heavy oak door of the ground-floor entry splintered with a thunderous crack.

Gabriel’s enforcers had breached the outer perimeter, their heavy combat boots pounding up the first flight of wooden stairs.

"Elias," Nora gasped, scrambling to her feet as the sounds of shouting echoed through the stairwell.

"Take this," Elias said, pressing a small silver key into her palm. "Behind the pantry is a dumbwaiter shaft converted into a fire ladder. It leads straight down to the underground utility tunnels."

"I'm not leaving you here to fight him alone," Nora insisted, her chin lifting with sudden defiance.

"You aren't running, Nora," Elias said, his gaze holding hers with fierce intensity. "You're getting to the extraction point while I turn his arrogant little siege into his public execution."

The reinforced metal door of the loft shuddered under a massive battering ram.

Metal groaned against concrete anchors as Gabriel roared from the hallway, his voice dripping with venom.

"Break it down! If Reed reaches for a weapon, shoot to kill, but bring my wife out untouched!"

May you like

Elias pulled the slide back on his sidearm, the metallic click ringing sharp and clear in the darkened room.

"Go, Nora. Your new life starts on the other side of that tunnel."
