Chapter 5 - The Collapse

Gabriel spun around to face Arthur, his fists clenched, his face contorting in murderous rage.
"You traitorous dog!" Gabriel roared, lunging toward his longtime lieutenant with bared teeth.
Before Gabriel could cross three feet, Elias moved with blinding speed, stepping between them and planting an open palm firmly into Gabriel’s chest.
The impact drove Gabriel backward, sending him stumbling against his leather chair with a breathless gasp.
"Keep your hands to yourself in this chamber, Hale," Elias said softly, his voice colder than the ice outside.
Helena Cross struck the table with her ivory gavel, the sharp crack echoing like a gunshot through the room.
"Gabriel Hale," Helena pronounced, her voice devoid of human mercy. "By unanimous consensus of the High Council, your executive charter is revoked effective immediately."
"You can't do this to me!" Gabriel shouted, clutching his bruised chest, his eyes wild with desperate fury. "I built the southern corridors! My men control every driver, every dockworker, every warehouse manager from here to Philadelphia!"
Nora smiled, a calm, pitying expression that cut Gabriel deeper than any blade could have.
"Your men received their holiday bonuses this morning from the Vance family trust, Gabriel," Nora revealed smoothly.
"Along with a twenty percent raise and full dental coverage. Do you really believe three thousand blue-collar workers will strike for an embezzler who used their pension funds to buy yachts?"
Gabriel sank into his chair, the horrifying reality collapsing over him like a suffocating avalanche.
He looked around the table at the faces of men and women who had toasted his health for five years.
Not one of them would meet his desperate gaze.
"You have twenty-four hours to vacate the Hale estate," Elder Vance commanded, signing the final decree with a flourishing stroke of his pen.
"Your personal accounts are frozen to satisfy your restitution debts to the alliance. If you remain within the city limits after sunrise tomorrow, your protection is officially terminated."
Gabriel stood up slowly, his movements wooden and uncoordinated.
He stared at Nora, who stood tall and unshakeable beside Elias Reed.
"You planned every single second of this, didn't you?" Gabriel whispered, his voice trembling with profound shock.
"From the day you found the phone," Nora answered without blinking. "I gave you five years of loyalty, Gabriel. You decided it was worth nothing. So I took everything else."
Gabriel turned without another word and stumbled out of the council chambers, his hollow footsteps echoing down the long marble corridor.
Arthur lingered behind for a brief moment, bowing his head respectfully toward Nora.
"I'm sorry, Miss Nora," Arthur murmured. "I should have stopped him years ago."
"Go home to your family, Arthur," Nora replied gently. "Your severance package has already been cleared through my father's bank."
As the heavy boardroom doors clicked shut, Elias looked down at Nora, his pale blue eyes warm with quiet admiration.
"That was magnificent," Elias said softly.
Nora exhaled a breath she felt she had been holding for half a decade.

"The battle inside the boardroom is over, Elias," she said, looking toward the gray storm clouds gathering over the harbor.
"Now comes the desperate man's final move."
