Chapter 8 - The Cornered Beast

Twelve thousand miles away in Los Angeles, it was ten o'clock on Sunday morning.

Inside the sprawling penthouse office of the Whitmore Foundation on Wilshire Boulevard, Grant Whitmore was pacing the imported wool carpet like a caged animal. Empty espresso cups and crumpled legal briefs littered his glass desk.

""What do you mean she's in Japan?!"" Grant roared, hurling a crystal paperweight against the wall, shattering it into jagged shards.

His chief legal counsel, a pale man sweating through his monogrammed dress shirt, flinched. ""Her passport was scanned at private aviation clearance in Haneda three hours ago, Grant. She flew out on Kenji Nishimura's personal jet. We tried to get an emergency injunction to flag her travel, but the judge wouldn't sign off without showing cause.""

""She has my ledger!"" Grant screamed, grabbing the lawyer by his lapels. ""She has the cold storage drive containing the Kuroda contracts! If she opens those files, we're finished! My father’s political career is finished! Do you understand what that means?!""

""Grant, calm down,"" the lawyer stammered, pulling himself free. ""The escrow contract is automated. It doesn't matter what she has on that drive. The wire clears tonight at midnight Tokyo time. Once Kuroda receives his thirty million, his people will eliminate any foreign audit attempts. Nishimura won't dare move against us once Kuroda has the liquidity.""

Grant’s phone began to vibrate violently on the desk.

The screen displayed an encrypted incoming call from an unlisted Tokyo number. Grant took a deep, ragged breath, adjusted his tie, and pressed the speaker button.

""Grant speaking.""

""Hello, Grant.""

The voice on the other end was not Kenji's deep baritone. It was Claire. Her tone was shockingly calm, crystal-clear, and completely free of the quiet accommodation she had shown him throughout their four years of marriage.

Grant froze. ""Claire? Where the hell are you? Do you have any idea the mess you've made? The press is tearing you apart! If you come home right now and hand over the firm's backup drives, I can fix this. I can tell the board you had an emotional episode—""

""I am currently sitting in the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office, Grant,"" Claire interrupted, her words slicing through his desperate rant like a scalpel.

The office went deathly silent. Grant’s heart skipped a beat. ""You're lying. You wouldn't dare.""

""Beside me is Director Takahashi of the Special Investigation Unit,"" Claire continued smoothly. ""And on my screen is the master escrow contract for Kuroda Enterprises. You really shouldn't have used my digital signature to secure your criminal shell companies, darling. It gave me full administrative control over your terminal node.""

""Claire, don't touch that contract!"" Grant shrieked, panic clawing at his throat. ""If you touch that money, Kuroda will kill me! You don't know who these people are! They aren't businessmen, Claire! They're monsters!""

""No, Grant,"" Kenji’s deep, resonant voice suddenly filled the speaker, freezing the blood in Grant’s veins. ""Kuroda is a coward who preys on desperate fools like you. And my family has just purchased all sixty million dollars of your outstanding promissory notes from the Bank of Tokyo.""

""Kenji... wait... please, let's talk about this!"" Grant pleaded, his knees trembling, his confident billionaire persona completely disintegrating. ""Vivian is my sister! We're family!""

""You forfeited that claim the moment you stole from Daiki,"" Kenji said coldly. ""Claire, execute the transfer.""

""Claire! No! Don't do this to me! I gave you everything! You were nothing before you married me!"" Grant screamed into the phone.

""I was a brilliant accountant before I met you, Grant,"" Claire said quietly into the receiver. ""And now, I am the one who balances your books. Goodbye.""

On the computer terminal across the world, Claire pressed Execute.
