Chapter 3 - The Safehouse in the Clouds

The Maybach did not stop at a hotel, nor did it head toward the familiar coastal mansions of Malibu where Claire had spent miserable weekends pretending to enjoy yacht parties with Grant’s sycophantic business partners. Instead, the car wound its way up into the Hollywood Hills, climbing through steep, winding canyon roads until it passed through a monolithic gate of blackened steel set directly into the granite hillside.
The residence was a masterclass in brutalist luxury—cast concrete, floor-to-ceiling sheets of reinforced glass, and cantilevered terraces floating over the sparkling grid of the Los Angeles basin like a stationary spaceship.
""Welcome to my sister-in-law's estate,"" Kenji said as the car came to a rest inside a subterranean glass garage containing six vintage Japanese sports cars. ""Vivian rarely visits the United States anymore, but she keeps the property fully staffed and entirely off public property records.""
Claire stepped out onto the polished epoxy floor, her heels echoing against the clean walls. ""Vivian hasn't spoken to Grant in five years. At our wedding, she stayed for twenty minutes, drank one glass of vintage Krug, and left for London before the cake was cut.""
""Vivian recognized what Grant was long before you did,"" Kenji remarked, leading her toward a private glass elevator. ""My brother, Daiki, made the mistake of entering a joint venture with your husband four years ago. Grant mismanaged eighteen million dollars of their shared development capital in Macau, blamed local market regulations, and hid behind the Whitmore family lawyers.""
""And your family let that go?"" Claire asked skeptically.
""My family does not forget debts, Claire. We simply wait for the interest to compound.""
The elevator deposited them into an immense living pavilion surrounded by midnight gardens and an infinity pool that mirrored the Los Angeles skyline. Waiting in the center of the room was a middle-aged woman wearing a minimalist dark linen tunic, her hands folded neatly in front of her.
""This is Hana,"" Kenji introduced. ""She will provide you with comfortable clothes, secure toiletries, and anything else you require. Your luggage from your marital home has already been retrieved.""
Claire stopped dead in her tracks, staring at him. ""Excuse me? My luggage?""
Hana gave a polite, respectful bow and gestured toward the hallway. In the dressing room beyond sat three large Rimowa suitcases—the exact ones Claire had kept in her private closet at the Bel Air estate, fully packed with her business suits, casual clothes, personal documents, and passport.
""How did you do that?"" Claire asked, a sharp edge of wariness entering her voice. ""I took off my ring forty minutes ago.""
""I knew you were going to take off your ring the moment you sat down at that dinner,"" Kenji answered, walking toward the terrace doors and sliding them open to let in the cool mountain breeze. ""A woman who checks her watch seventy-two times in an hour and counts the steps between her chair and the exit is not attending a gala. She is executing an evacuation plan. I merely expedited your logistics.""
Claire stared at the man standing against the glittering panorama of the city. He was dangerous—not because he carried weapons or commanded silent men in dark suits, but because he saw through the facade that had fooled everyone else in her life. For four years, Grant had looked at her without seeing her. Kenji had seen every microscopic calculation in her mind within seconds.
""You didn't do this out of charity, Kenji,"" Claire said, crossing the room to stand five feet away from him, refusing to be intimidated. ""Let's dispense with the chivalry. What do you actually want from me?""
Kenji turned slowly. The wind ruffled his dark hair, exposing the sharp, aristocratic cut of his jawline and the intense, assessing darkness in his eyes.
""Tomorrow morning, Grant will file emergency motions with the Los Angeles Superior Court. He will invoke the arbitration clause in your prenuptial agreement, freeze your joint checking accounts, and attempt to seize your private forensic accounting firm under the guise of shared marital property.""
Claire felt a cold shiver run down her spine. ""He wouldn't dare. My firm was incorporated three years before I met him.""
""His father sits on the judicial appointment committee, Claire. The local bench belongs to his family,"" Kenji replied coldly. ""By noon tomorrow, you will be legally barred from accessing your own client servers. Unless you have the master keys to the Whitmore Foundation's off-balance-sheet ledger.""
May you like
""And if I do?"" Claire challenged.
""Then tomorrow night, you and I board a private gulfstream to Haneda,"" Kenji said, stepping closer until she could smell the subtle scent of hinoki wood and cedar on his lapel. ""You audit forty-seven million dollars of dirty money that Grant laundered through Japanese real estate trusts. You help me recover what was stolen from my family. In return, I will give you Grant Whitmore's total, unconditional destruction.""
