Chapter 5 - Fire on Figueroa

The city streets were nearly deserted as the black Maybach tore through the concrete canyons of downtown Los Angeles at three in the morning. Rain had begun to fall, slicking the asphalt and reflecting the garish neon signs of late-night convenience stores.

Claire clutched the grab handle as the driver swung the heavy sedan around a sharp corner onto Figueroa Street. Her office was located on the fourteenth floor of a mid-century Art Deco tower—a building her grandfather had helped construct decades ago.

As they approached the block, Claire’s stomach plummeted.

A sleek black Mercedes van was parked haphazardly across the entrance plaza, its hazard lights flashing. The glass double doors of the building lobby were shattered into glittering diamond fragments across the pavement. Two men in tactical clothing and dark ballcaps were dragging heavy pelican cases out through the broken glass toward the van.

""Grant's private security contractor,"" Claire gasped. ""Vanguard Tactical. He uses them for high-value asset protection.""

""They are mercenaries,"" Kenji said, his voice dropping into a register of icy, deliberate calm. ""Sato, ram the van.""

Claire braced herself, but there was no time to scream. The Maybach accelerated without hesitation, slamming into the rear quarter-panel of the Mercedes van with a deafening metallic crunch. The impact spun the van sideways, crushing the pelican cases beneath the crumpled sheet metal and scattering loose server drives across the wet asphalt.

The two mercenaries stumbled back, drawing concealed handguns from beneath their windbreakers.

""Stay down!"" Kenji commanded, shoving Claire's head toward the floorboard as he reached beneath his seat.

He didn't draw a gun. He stepped out of the vehicle into the pouring rain, holding a heavy steel baton. From the trailing escort vehicle that had followed them from the hills, four men in tailored suits emerged into the headlights like phantoms.

The mercenaries raised their weapons, but before they could fire, Kenji moved with terrifying, fluid speed.

Claire watched through the tinted windshield in stunned silence. There was no hesitation, no wasted motion. Kenji closed the distance in two strides, his baton striking the wrist of the first gunman with the sickening crack of breaking bone. The gun clattered to the wet concrete. In the same motion, Kenji pivoted, driving an elbow into the second man’s solar plexus, sweeping his leg out, and pinning him face-down against the curb before the guard could even draw breath to shout.

The other four men from Kenji's security detail secured the perimeter within thirty seconds, disarming the remaining contractor and pushing him onto his knees with his hands cuffed behind his back.

Kenji walked back toward the Maybach, the rain plastering his dark hair against his temples, his shirt damp against his broad chest. He didn't look winded. He looked like an apex predator returning from a casual patrol.

He opened the car door and offered Claire his hand. ""Come. Let us see what they were trying to steal.""

Claire stepped over the shattered glass of the lobby, her heart pounding in her ears. Upstairs in her suite, the server room was a disaster zone. Racks had been pulled from the walls, cables severed with wire cutters, and the central cooling unit smashed with a sledgehammer.

""They got the primary arrays,"" Claire said, running her trembling fingers over the ruined metal casings. ""Everything is wiped.""

""Look closer, Claire,"" Kenji said, standing beside her in the ruined room. ""You are an expert who anticipates failure. Where is the real drive?""

Claire looked at him, a ghost of a smile touching the corners of her lips despite the chaos. She walked over to the breakroom corner, bypassed the destroyed mainframes, and knelt down in front of the vintage espresso machine on the counter. She pulled out the grounds container, pressed a hidden mechanical latch beneath the heating coil, and slid out a slim, gold-plated solid-state drive the size of a business card.

""Redundant cold storage,"" Claire whispered, holding up the drive. ""Every shell company. Every fraudulent wire. Every dime Grant Whitmore ever stole.""

Kenji smiled for the first time since they had met—a slow, dangerous grin that sent a strange warmth coursing through her veins. ""Pack your bags, Claire. Tokyo awaits.""
