Chapter 6 - Thirty Thousand Feet to Haneda

The Whitmore corporate jet was an eighty-million-dollar flying palace, but Kenji’s private Gulfstream G650 made Grant's aircraft look like a budget commuter shuttle.
By sunrise on Sunday morning, the jet was cruising at forty-one thousand feet over the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Inside the soundproof cabin, the ambient noise was reduced to a soft, soothing whisper of air against composite carbon fiber. The interior was finished in muted matte-grey leather, brushed titanium, and warm cedar accents that filled the space with an earthy, calming fragrance.
Claire had changed into a tailored charcoal cashmere sweater and dark trousers provided by Hana before their departure. She sat at a wide conference table equipped with four ultra-high-definition monitors, the gold-plated backup drive plugged securely into an isolated sandbox terminal.
Kenji sat opposite her, holding a delicate porcelain cup of hojicha tea.
""Grant has already declared war in the press,"" Kenji noted, sliding a tablet toward her.
Claire glanced down at the headlines splashing across the entertainment and business news outlets.
SCANDAL AT THE WHITMORE GALA: HEIRESS ACCOUNTANT VANISHES WITH MILLIONS AMID DIVORCE CLAIMS.
Grant had wasted no time. The article, penned by a high-society journalist on the Whitmore family payroll, painted Claire as an unstable, jealous wife who had embezzled client funds, caused an unprovoked scene at a charity event, and fled the country with an unidentified foreign national. Grant was quoted expressing ""deep concern for his wife’s mental well-being"" while promising donors that the Whitmore Foundation remained fully solvent.
""He's projecting,"" Claire said, her voice dripping with disgust. ""He's trying to discredit my credibility before I can approach the Securities and Exchange Commission. If the public thinks I'm a bitter, vindictive spouse having a nervous breakdown, any audit report I release will be dismissed as an axe to grind.""
""A predictable strategy from a small mind,"" Kenji replied smoothly. ""Grant operates within the polite boundaries of American society, where public perception buys time. But time has run out for him.""
Claire leaned forward, resting her chin on her hands, studying the intricate lines etched across Kenji’s fingers and knuckles. ""You never told me how you ended up running this syndicate, Kenji. Vivian said her husband's family were legitimate real estate tycoons in Kyoto.""
Kenji’s eyes softened slightly, a rare glimpse of personal history surfacing beneath his iron facade. ""My grandfather founded the Nishimura Group seventy years ago after the war. In Japan, the line between legitimate corporate conglomerate and traditional underworld governance is not as distinct as it is in the West. We build hospitals, we fund transportation networks, and we enforce order where the law is too slow or too corrupt to act.""
""And your brother Daiki?""
""Daiki is an academic. An architect. He wanted no part of our family's darker responsibilities,"" Kenji explained. ""When Daiki married Vivian, our father granted him his independence, funded his development firm, and told him to build a clean life. When Grant Whitmore preyed on Daiki’s trust and stole his capital, he did not just commit a corporate crime. He insulted my blood. And in my world, an insult to family requires complete and total restitution.""
Claire watched him closely. There was a raw, primal honor in the way Kenji spoke—a stark contrast to Grant’s superficial charm and hollow promises. Grant used people like disposable props to elevate his own vanity. Kenji bore the weight of his entire family on his shoulders without uttering a single complaint.
""I need five hours to synthesize these transactional trees,"" Claire said, her eyes returning to the monitors, her fingers finding their rhythm once more. ""By the time we touch down at Haneda, I will have an unbroken paper trail tracing the cancer wing money directly through Kuroda’s accounts and into Grant’s private Swiss vault in Zurich.""

Kenji reached across the table, his fingers gently brushing the back of her hand. The touch was brief, but it sent an electric pulse through her entire body.
""Work well, Claire,"" he murmured. ""Tonight, we take back what is yours.""
