Chapter 4 - The Midnight Audit

Claire didn't sleep. While Hana unpacked her clothes and placed a silk robe across the foot of the master bed, Claire sat barefoot at the long walnut dining table with a steaming mug of green tea and her encrypted hard drives.
Kenji had provided her with a closed-circuit satellite terminal completely detached from civilian internet infrastructure. For three hours, the only sound in the glass pavilion was the rhythmic, frantic clacking of Claire’s keyboard as she navigated through layers of corporate shell companies, Cayman trust deeds, and dummy invoices.
Grant had thought he was clever. For years, he had treated Claire like a decorative trophy, a brilliant mathematician whose skills were useful for organizing his tax exemptions but otherwise dismissed as ""boring accounting stuff."" What he had forgotten was that Claire held the administrative security certificates for the Whitmore Foundation's central server.
When she bypassed the front-end interface and dove into the raw database logs, the truth revealed itself like blood blooming in clear water.
""Unbelievable,"" Claire whispered to the empty room.
""Find something?""
Kenji appeared from the shadowy corridor, wearing a charcoal silk lounge shirt unbuttoned at the throat, revealing the intricate black-and-grey scales of a mythological Ryu dragon tattooed across his collarbone. He carried a silver tray with two fresh cups of tea.
Claire didn't look up from the glowing screen. ""Grant didn't just lose eighteen million in Macau. He set up six ghost logistics companies registered in Delaware, each using the exact same registered agent address in Wilmington. He transferred thirty-two million dollars out of the pediatric cancer wing endowment over the last eighteen months.""
""Using what justification?"" Kenji asked, setting the cup beside her and leaning over her shoulder to inspect the lines of data.
Claire felt the warmth of his body near hers, but her focus remained locked on the numbers. ""Consulting fees. Procurement of specialized medical equipment from a distributor in Yokohama named Kuroda Enterprises."" She paused, turning her head to look directly up into Kenji's face. ""Does that name mean anything to you?""
A subtle, dangerous darkness settled over Kenji’s features. ""Kuroda is the front company for a rogue faction of the Inagawa-kai syndicate. Five years ago, they broke treaty with my family's coalition in Shinjuku. Grant wasn't just losing money on bad investments. He was funding a gang war on foreign soil to secure illegal casino concessions in Chiba.""
""Good lord,"" Claire breathed, the magnitude of the conspiracy knocking the air from her lungs. ""He isn't just embezzling. He's financing international criminal syndicates. If the Department of Justice sees these transaction receipts, Grant won't just lose his family fortune. He’ll spend the rest of his natural life in a federal penitentiary.""
""The DOJ cannot touch Kuroda's accounts without foreign cooperation,"" Kenji pointed out. ""And the local Japanese authorities are currently compromised by Kuroda's political donors. Which brings us back to Tokyo.""
""Why do you need me in Tokyo if you already know this?""
Kenji touched the screen, his long finger indicating a complex cryptographic signature attached to the final transfer node. ""The accounts in Tokyo are locked behind a dual-key algorithmic escrow system. Grant was stupid enough to assign the master cryptographic token to the one person he thought would never look: his wife’s personal digital signature. You are the only person on earth who can authorize the seizure of those funds.""
Before Claire could respond, the satellite terminal on the desk let out a sharp, urgent beep. A red warning banner flashed across the primary display:
ALERT: UNAUTHORIZED INTRUSION DETECTED AT CITADEL FINANCIAL ARCHIVES.
Claire grabbed the mouse. ""Someone is executing a remote wipe of my firm’s downtown servers. Right now.""
""Can you stop it?""
May you like
""Not from here. It's a hardware override. Someone physically plugged an electromagnetic degausser into my server racks in downtown Los Angeles."" Claire pushed back her chair, panic finally breaking through her composure. ""That server holds every backup, every scrap of forensic evidence, every client file I've built over eleven years. If those drives are fried, I have no legal leverage left.""
Kenji pulled a slim radio from his pocket and pressed the transmission key. ""Sato. Bring the car around. Alert the security team at 6th and Figueroa. We have guests.""
