Chapter 7 - The Price Of Arrogance

The silence in the penthouse was thick and heavy, punctuated only by the distant hum of Manhattan traffic twenty stories below. Marcus and the legal team quietly excused themselves to the adjoining conference room, leaving us alone.
Alexander took a hesitant step forward, stopping five feet away, terrified that if he moved any closer, I would vanish into thin air.
""Claire,"" he croaked, his throat tight with tears he could no longer hold back. ""I don't know what to say. There are no words in the English language to describe how completely, utterly disgusted I am with myself.""
""Then don't say anything, Alexander,"" I said softly, walking over to the window to look out over the sprawling canopy of Central Park.
""I have to!"" he pleaded, taking another desperate step, falling to his knees behind me. He reached out, his trembling fingers hovering inches from the hem of my trousers, not daring to make contact. ""I was an arrogant, blind fool. When Olivia threatened to jump out that window... I panicked. I thought she was fragile. I thought I was protecting her. I told myself that you were strong, that you loved me enough to understand, that asking you to sit in the cargo hold was just a temporary logistical fix to keep the peace. I convinced myself of that lie so I wouldn't have to face the truth.""
I turned slowly to face him. Looking down at this billionaire, this titan of industry who had once controlled the lives of thousands, reduced to a weeping shell on the carpet, I felt neither triumph nor joy.
I only felt an overwhelming sense of closure.
""You didn't ask me to sit in the cargo hold to keep the peace, Alexander,"" I said, my voice steady, devoid of the anger he so desperately wished to fight against. ""You asked me because in your heart, you believed I had nowhere else to go. You believed that because I loved you, my self-worth was disposable. You thought that no matter how deep the gutter you pushed me into, I would always crawl back out and smile at your family table because you were Alexander Moretti.""
Tears streamed freely down his hollow cheeks, dripping onto the fine fabric of his trousers. ""I loved you, Claire. I swear to God I loved you. I still love you.""
""No, you loved having a companion who never demanded accountability,"" I countered. ""You loved having someone to absorb your family's toxicity so you didn't have to deal with it. But that woman died the moment you told me to climb into that luggage bay.""
Alexander buried his face in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking with violent sobs. ""What do you want me to do? Tell me what to do to fix this. I'll sign over Moretti Enterprises. I'll strip my name off the building. I'll renounce my family entirely. I'll spend the rest of my life working as your subordinate, your driver, anything—just don't throw me away like this. Please, Claire. Give me one chance to prove I can be the man you deserved.""
I reached into my briefcase on the table and pulled out a single fountain pen and a slim blue folder.
May you like
I knelt down on one knee so my eyes were level with his.
""There are no second chances for a man who asks his wife to travel with the baggage, Alexander.""
