Chapter 4 - The Reckoning In Manhattan

Three days later, the penthouse suite at the Carlyle was bathed in crisp morning sunlight.

I sat at the mahogany dining table, wearing a tailored charcoal-grey suit from Yves Saint Laurent, my hair pulled back into a sleek, professional chignon. Across from me sat Marcus Vance, along with a team of four senior forensic accountants and our head of public relations.

""Moretti Enterprises stock has plummeted forty-two percent since Monday,"" Marcus reported, sliding an iPad across the table toward me with a calm, satisfied smile. ""The news that their Midwest distribution networks have been shuttered triggered a mass sell-off. Their major automotive partners have already issued default notices. If Alexander can't restore freight operations by tomorrow afternoon, the entire conglomerate will breach its debt covenants with JPMorgan.""

I took a slow sip of Earl Grey tea, feeling an intoxicating sense of clarity. For three long years, I had walked on eggshells in Alexander’s home, convinced that if I just loved him enough, if I was just patient enough, he would eventually see me as his equal. I had endured Olivia’s malicious little games—the ruined dresses she claimed were accidental laundry mishaps, the deliberately uninvited dinners, the whispered lies to Alexander that I had insulted her behind closed doors.

Alexander had always taken her side. ""Claire, she was adopted after a horrific tragedy. She’s fragile. She has abandonment trauma. You're an adult; you need to be the bigger person.""

Being the ""bigger person"" had almost destroyed my soul. But it had also given me time to observe.

Because Alexander had entrusted Olivia with an executive vanity title—Director of Global Philanthropy—she had used the position to embezzle over thirty million dollars through fictitious charitable foundations in the Cayman Islands, all co-signed by Alexander under the guise of family tax planning. Alexander had been so blinded by his devotion to his ""angelic"" sister that he had never audited a single invoice she brought to his desk.

I had.

""Claire,"" Marcus said gently, pulling me out of my thoughts. ""He’s downstairs.""

I didn't blink. ""Alone?""

""No. He brought his mother and Olivia. They've been begging hotel security for an audience since six in the morning. Alexander looks like a ghost. He hasn't slept in seventy-two hours.""

""Let them up,"" I said quietly, setting my teacup down without a sound. ""It’s time to settle the bill.""

Five minutes later, the double doors of the presidential suite swung open.

Alexander practically threw himself into the room. The contrast between the man who had ordered me to the cargo hold and the man standing before me was staggering. His immaculate custom suit was wrinkled and stained with coffee. His jaw was covered in dark, uneven stubble, and his eyes were hollow, sunken, and bloodshot with exhaustion and dread.

Behind him came Eleanor, walking with a stiff, terrified tremor, and Olivia, whose face was completely devoid of makeup, her eyes puffy from days of genuine weeping.

""Claire!"" Alexander choked out, taking two rapid steps toward me, his hands reaching outward as if he could simply pull me into a hug and erase the past week. ""Claire, thank God. Please. You have to listen to me.""

""Stop right there, Mr. Moretti,"" Marcus Vance commanded, stepping forward with two broad-shouldered private security officers flanking him.

Alexander stopped, his gaze locked entirely on me. His chest heaved as he took in my appearance—not the meek, simply dressed woman who waited for him in his Chicago foyer, but a powerful, commanding billionaire standing in the heart of Manhattan’s elite circle.

""Claire... why?"" Alexander whispered, his voice cracking with agony. ""Why didn't you tell me who you were? Why did you pretend all these years?""

I leaned back against the mahogany table, looking at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated indifference.

May you like

""Because I wanted a husband who loved me, Alexander,"" I said softly, every word landing like an executioner’s axe. ""Not a partner who negotiated with me. But you didn't want a wife. You wanted an obedient accessory. You wanted someone you could push into the shadows whenever your precious sister demanded the spotlight.""

""I was wrong!"" Alexander cried out, falling to his knees right there on the Persian rug, heedless of the lawyers, the bodyguards, and his horrified mother watching him. ""I swear to you, Claire, on my life, I was blind! The moment that plane took off and I saw your ring, I felt like my soul had been ripped out of my chest! I don't care about the warehouses! I don't care about the logistics contracts! I just want my wife back!""
