Chapter 6 - The Fall Of Eleanor

The metallic click of the handcuffs echoed through the Carlyle suite like thunder. Olivia began screaming obscenities, thrashing violently against the two agents holding her arms, completely abandoning the helpless, fainting routine she had mastered for a decade.
""Alex, you coward!"" she shrieked as they dragged her toward the foyer. ""You let this little bitch ruin me! You were always pathetic! You gave me everything because you were too stupid to see I was playing you from day one!""
Eleanor rushed after them into the hallway, crying out her daughter's name, but the elevator doors slid shut, sealing Olivia’s fate.
When Eleanor returned to the living room, her face was contorted in absolute fury. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at me, her voice shaking with aristocratic outrage.
""You monster!"" Eleanor hissed at me. ""You brought the feds into our family business! You aired our private matters before the world! Do you have any idea what this will do to the Moretti name? We are high society! We built this city! You were supposed to be Alexander's quiet, respectful partner, and instead, you've dragged us into the gutter!""
I didn't flinch. I took a slow, measured step toward my mother-in-law.
""The Moretti name was built on your late husband's pride and my grandfather’s generosity, Eleanor,"" I said, my tone ice-cold. ""For three years, you treated me like an uninvited servant. You criticized my clothes, you insulted my background at country club lunches, and whenever Olivia threw a tantrum, you demanded that I swallow the humiliation so your precious golden child wouldn't have to face reality.""
""Because you were an outsider!"" Eleanor spat back, refusing to yield an inch of her bloated vanity. ""You never belonged in our world!""
""Then it's a good thing I'm taking my world back,"" I replied calmly.
Marcus stepped forward, handing a second legal document directly to Eleanor.
""What is this trash?"" she sneered, refusing to touch the paper.
""It is a formal foreclosure notice on the Moretti ancestral estate in Lake Forest, Illinois,"" Marcus explained with clinical precision. ""Seven years ago, when your husband faced bankruptcy during the shipping crisis, the Vance Trust quietly purchased the primary mortgage notes on your family estate to prevent a public scandal. In exchange, the Moretti family was granted a lifelong tenancy lease—contingent upon flawless corporate compliance.""
Eleanor’s face drained of every remaining drop of color. ""What... what did you say?""
""You have seventy-two hours to vacate the Lake Forest estate, Eleanor,"" I said, looking her straight in the eye. ""Every piece of furniture, every heirloom painting, and every luxury vehicle registered under the family trust belongs to Vance Holdings. The moving trucks arrive on Friday morning. I suggest you start packing your own bags. You won't have staff to do it for you.""
Eleanor clutched her chest, her breathing turning ragged and shallow. She looked to Alexander for salvation. ""Alexander... tell her she can't do this! This is our home! Your father built that house!""
Alexander stood motionless, his head hanging low, staring at the floor. The weight of his blind arrogance had finally crushed him into total, agonizing submission.
""She can do whatever she wants, Mother,"" Alexander whispered, his voice completely hollow. ""She owns everything. She always did.""
Eleanor let out a pathetic, strangled sob. Realizing that no one was coming to rescue her, she turned and fled from the room, stumbling into the elevator bank alone, stripped of her pride, her status, and her home.

Alexander remained.
Just him and me.
