Chapter 3 - The Broken Pedestal

Alexander dropped his arm, the luxury smartphone dangling loosely at his side as David’s words echoed through his consciousness like physical blows. The sterile smell of aviation fuel and industrial carpet cleaner filled his nostrils, grounding him in a reality that felt like a nightmare.

Claire?

The woman who spent her Sunday afternoons quietly arranging fresh peonies in the penthouse foyer? The woman who never raised her voice, who quietly retreated to the guest bedroom whenever Olivia staged one of her dramatic crying fits? The woman he had ordered into a pressurized luggage bay like a piece of discarded equipment?

""Alex, honey, my ankle hurts,"" Olivia whined, hobbling into the terminal lounge, leaning heavily on the arm of Alexander’s mother, Eleanor Moretti, who had flown with them. Eleanor’s face was pale with irritation, her diamond earrings catching the harsh terminal lighting.

""Alexander, this is absurd,"" Eleanor demanded, brushing past Miller. ""Olivia is on the verge of complete collapse from this turbulence. We need to book the presidential suite at the nearest Ritz immediately. Why haven't you ordered the ground limousines? And what on earth is Claire playing at, running away like an ungrateful child? When we find her, I will personally see to it that she apologizes to Olivia on her knees for ruining our holiday.""

Alexander slowly turned to face his mother and the sister he had shielded from every unpleasant gust of wind for twenty years.

For the first time in his life, the sight of Olivia’s trembling lower lip and theatrical sighs didn't evoke a protective instinct. It filled him with a sickening, suffocating rage.

""Shut up,"" Alexander whispered.

Eleanor gasped, her hand flying to her pearl necklace. ""What did you say to me?""

""I said SHUT UP!"" Alexander roared, the sound echoing through the cavernous terminal so violently that two private pilots resting in the corner stood up in alarm.

Olivia froze, her mouth hanging open, tears of genuine terror suddenly welling in her eyes—not the delicate, manipulative tears she used to extract jewelry and private shopping sprees, but the sheer panic of a spoiled child realizing the world was no longer bending to her whims.

""Do you have any idea what you've done?"" Alexander stepped forward, towering over Olivia, his eyes bloodshot and wild. ""Do you have any concept of what you pushed her to do?""

""Me?"" Olivia squeaked, retreating behind Eleanor. ""I didn't do anything! She's the one who made me uncomfortable! She looked at me with those cold eyes! You promised me I would always come first, Alex! You told her to go to the cargo hold, not me!""

""Because I was an idiot!"" Alexander shouted, grabbing his hair with both hands, his composure completely unraveling. ""Because I let you treat my marriage like your personal plaything! She didn't just leave, Olivia! She holds our throat in her hands! Moretti Enterprises is bleeding fifty million dollars every single hour those freight hubs are closed!""

Eleanor sneered, attempting to reassert her aristocratic dominance. ""Don't be ridiculous, Alexander. Claire doesn't have the courage or the money to hurt us. Her family was bankrupt. We took her in out of charity.""

""She owns the Vance Trust, Mother!"" Alexander screamed directly into his mother’s face. ""The Vance Trust! The company that owns our warehouses, our rail access, our international shipping licenses! She isn't a charity case! We were the parasites living off her grandfather's infrastructure, and I just ordered her to sleep on top of suitcases!""

Eleanor’s haughty expression shattered instantly, replaced by a ghastly, pale mask of shock. She stumbled backward, landing heavily on a leather club chair, her aristocratic poise evaporating in a second.

Alexander didn't wait to watch them crumble further. He turned to Miller, his voice trembling with an urgency he had never experienced before.

""Get the jet refueled immediately. We aren't going to Aspen. We aren't going to Chicago. Track down Marcus Vance’s corporate headquarters in Manhattan. Find out where Claire is staying. If I have to crawl across broken glass from Central Park to Wall Street, I am going to bring my wife back.""

Miller looked down at his shoes, hesitating.

""What is it, Miller?"" Alexander growled.

""Sir... Mrs. Moretti’s legal counsel didn't just file the lease revocations,"" Miller murmured quietly. ""They also delivered a package to the Federal Trade Commission and the Internal Revenue Service twenty minutes ago. An anonymous whistleblower submitted six years of Miss Olivia’s offshore shell company ledgers—the ones funded through Moretti Logistics.""

Alexander’s heart plummeted into an icy abyss.
