Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth In The Sky

The twin-engine Gulfstream G650 banked hard against the turbulent grey clouds over Lake Michigan, but the storm outside was nothing compared to the fury boiling inside Alexander Moretti. His knuckles were bone-white as he gripped the brushed-chrome handle of the pressurized cargo door. Down below, neatly stacked rows of designer leather luggage sat in motionless perfection. Pristine garment bags, trunks of Italian cashmere, and matching Louis Vuitton cases carrying Olivia’s extensive wardrobe lined the stainless-steel rails.

There was no blanket tucked between the hard suitcases. There was no curled-up, weeping woman hiding behind garment bags in the dim emergency lighting.

There was only a single, heavy silver band resting precisely on top of Alexander’s monogrammed briefcase.

My wedding ring.

Alexander stared down at the polished platinum band as if it were a venomous snake coiled to strike. His chest heaved against his tailored cashmere sweater, his breath coming in shallow, ragged bursts. For three years, he had operated under the absolute conviction that gravity itself bowed to his authority. When Alexander Moretti issued a command, boards of directors capitulated, competitors withdrew their bids, and his wife swallowed her pride and obeyed. He had truly, genuinely believed that telling me to crawl into the cargo hold like a stray dog was merely an administrative compromise—a minor sacrifice to ensure his fragile adopted sister, Olivia, wouldn’t suffer an anxiety attack during their luxury getaway to Aspen.

""Where is she, Miller?"" Alexander’s voice was dangerously low, vibrating with an edge of hysteria that made his chief bodyguard take a step backward. ""You checked the passenger manifest. You cleared the airstrip. Where is my wife?""

Miller swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the flight deck. ""Sir... the ground crew in Chicago signed off on the exterior luggage loading forty minutes before departure. I assumed Mrs. Moretti boarded through the forward stairs while we were settling Miss Olivia into the master cabin. The private terminal surveillance... we just received the ping from headquarters. She never entered the tarmac hangar. She left the VIP lounge through the back service exit twenty minutes before taxi.""

Alexander whipped around, storming back into the ultra-luxurious main cabin where the air smelled faintly of lavender and vanilla blossoms. Olivia was lounging across the cream leather sectional, a cashmere throw draped over her delicate shoulders, a glass of freshly pressed peach juice resting in her manicured hand.

""Alex, what’s all that shouting?"" Olivia asked, blinking her wide, doe-like eyes, her lower lip trembling with rehearsed vulnerability. ""The pilot made a sudden turn and spilled my drink. You promised this trip was going to be peaceful. My head is pounding already.""

""Claire didn't get on the plane,"" Alexander snapped, not bothering to lower his voice to the gentle, soothing register he usually reserved exclusively for her.

Olivia’s eyes widened slightly, but beneath the practiced shock, a faint, razor-thin smirk flickered across her mouth. ""She didn't? But Alex... she promised you she would cooperate. Why does she always have to ruin everything by being so dramatic? If she wanted to stay home and pout in Chicago, you should just let her. We don't need her negative energy ruining our family vacation anyway.""

Alexander didn't answer. He ripped his encrypted smartphone from his pocket, his thumb smashing the speed dial for my personal line.

The screen blinked. He pressed the phone to his ear, expecting my familiar, quiet voice to answer, waiting to deliver the scolding of a lifetime for embarrassing him in front of his crew.

Instead, a robotic, monotone operator chime echoed in his ear: ""The number you have dialed is no longer in service or has been permanently disconnected. Error code nine-four-zero.""

He tapped the screen furiously. He tried my backup line. Disconnected. He tried calling the penthouse landline. The call was instantly routed to an automated commercial real estate registry.

""What is the meaning of this?"" Alexander hissed, his fingers shaking as he opened his banking app to track my secondary credit cards—the ones he had generously supplied to prove his status as a provider.

Every single authorized card linked to the Moretti family corporate trust had been cancelled at 6:00 AM sharp. More than that, a formal notification from the First National Bank of Illinois flashed across his notification bar: Notice of Asset Separation and Dissolution of Spousal Power of Attorney.

""Alex?"" Olivia whined from the sofa, sitting up and reaching for his wrist with frail fingers. ""Sit down. You're scaring me. My heart is beating so fast...""

Alexander pulled his arm away from her touch—a gesture so abrupt, so instinctive, that Olivia gasped in genuine disbelief.

May you like

""Turn this jet around,"" Alexander roared toward the cockpit, his face flushed dark crimson. ""Turn this damn plane around right now!""

""Sir,"" Miller whispered, holding up a tablet that had just buzzed with a red priority alert from the Moretti Enterprises executive floor. ""You need to see this. The legal department just forwarded an emergency filing from the Delaware Chancery Court. It isn't just that Mrs. Moretti left... she took the foundation with her.""
