Chapter 9 - The Final Confrontation

A week before Ethan was scheduled to enter his formal guilty plea, Marcus received a formal request from the federal detention center. Ethan had asked for a private meeting with me. The rules of the facility allowed for a supervised attorney-client visiting room.

Marcus urged me to decline. ""You don't owe him a single second of your time, Clara. Let him rot in there until his sentencing.""

""I know I don't owe him anything,"" I said calmly. ""But I need him to look at me one last time. Not as his victim, and not as his bitter ex-wife. I want him to see who I truly am.""

The visiting room was small, cold, and lit by buzzing fluorescent strips. When the heavy steel door opened, Ethan was escorted in wearing a bright orange prison jumpsuit. His wrists were handcuffed to a belly chain, and his feet shuffled in canvas slip-ons. His face was gaunt, his hair streaked with gray, and his shoulders were permanently slouched.

He sat across the laminate table, his hollow eyes staring at me. I wore an ivory cashmere sweater, my gold wedding ring long replaced by a simple vintage sapphire ring that had belonged to my mother.

""You look beautiful, Clara,"" he said, his voice barely above a whisper. It was the first time in years he had spoken to me without a condescending sneer.

""Why did you ask me to come, Ethan?""

Ethan stared down at his handcuffed hands, a shudder running through his frame. ""I wanted to know... why didn't you just leave me when you found the Miami receipt three months ago? Why did you come to that cabin?""

I looked at him, feeling nothing but a faint pity for a man who had traded his soul for worthless illusions.

""Because I took my vows seriously,"" I answered honestly. ""Even after I knew about Sophia, part of me wanted to give you the chance to remember who you used to be. I went to the cabin where you proposed because I wanted to remember why I fell in love with you. I left the unsigned divorce papers on the kitchen counter to see if, on our eleventh anniversary, you would walk through that door and choose our life together.""

A tear traced a path down Ethan's hollow cheek. ""And instead, I turned off my phone.""

""Instead, you called my life a 'little thing' and flew across the world to show off another woman,"" I said, leaning closer so he could hear every syllable clearly. ""You thought you broke me, Ethan. You thought that by chipping away at my self-esteem for a decade, I would become helpless without your money. But when that roof caved in, when the snow rushed into my lungs and the cold settled into my bones, I realized something important.""

Ethan looked up, his lips trembling. ""What?""

""I realized that being frozen under an avalanche was warmer than any night I ever spent sleeping beside you.""

Ethan broke down, burying his face in his cuffed hands, his shoulders heaving with uncontrollable sobs of regret. He realized that he hadn't just lost his company, his wealth, and his freedom; he had thrown away the only person in the world who had truly, unconditionally loved him.

I stood up, smoothed down my sweater, and knocked on the steel door for the guard. As the heavy lock clicked open, I didn't look back once.
