Chapter 4 - The Unmasking

By the third morning, the frostbite on my fingers had begun to heal, replaced by a dull, throbbing ache that served as a constant reminder of how close I had come to the grave. Marcus Hayes sat in the leather armchair beside my hospital bed, an open laptop resting on his knees.

""The digital forensics team managed to extract the uncorrupted master file from your phone, Clara,"" Marcus said, his deep voice calm and reassuring. ""The footage is pristine. The audio from the landline recording is completely legible. We have Sophia's exact words, timestamped and geo-located to the private villa in the Maldives.""

I looked out the hospital window at the snowy peaks in the distance. ""And the safe documents?""

""Photographed in high resolution right before the battery died,"" Marcus replied, a cold smile touching the corners of his mouth. ""Your father suspected before he died that Ethan had forged the logistics contracts to trigger the default on his fleet. He just never found the paper trail. Ethan kept the signed originals as personal insurance against his former partners. You literally pulled the smoking gun out of the avalanche.""

A soft knock interrupted us. A hospital orderly stepped inside to deliver breakfast, but behind him stood Ethan. He pushed past the orderly, ignoring Marcus's immediate attempt to stand between us.

""Marcus, give us ten minutes,"" Ethan said, his voice raw and exhausted. Dark circles hung beneath his bloodshot eyes. ""I just want to talk to my wife.""

""She has nothing to say to you, Mr. Black,"" Marcus replied sternly. ""And you have a restraining order pending.""

""Let him stay, Marcus,"" I said quietly, adjusting the hospital blankets over my legs. ""Let's hear what my loving husband has to say.""

Marcus hesitated, then nodded slowly. ""I'll be right outside the door. One word, Clara, and security removes him.""

When the door clicked shut, Ethan collapsed into the chair beside my bed, burying his face in his hands. ""Clara... look at me. Please. I know I was a monster. I know I broke every promise I made to you. When I saw that first video... seeing you freezing, thinking you were saying goodbye... it tore my soul in half. I swear to you, Sophia meant nothing. It was an ego trip. A stupid, reckless distraction.""

I watched him perform, utterly unmoved. A year ago, this display of remorse would have brought me to tears. I would have blamed myself for not being enough, for not keeping his attention. But hypothermia has a way of freezing out all illusions.

""Is that why Sophia called the cabin phone twenty minutes after the snow buried me?"" I asked, my voice deadly level.

Ethan froze, his hands slowly dropping from his face. ""What are you talking about?""

""She called the landline, Ethan. The auxiliary emergency phone connected to the local generator. She knew I was up there alone. She knew the storm was historic."" I leaned forward, staring directly into his widening eyes. ""And she told me to enjoy dying in the snow because you would never leave her side.""

Ethan turned ashen. ""She... she didn't. She told me she had no idea where you went.""

""You really thought the second video was me crying over our broken vows, didn't you?"" I whispered, a faint, bitter smile touching my lips. ""You thought I begged the rescue worker to hide it because I was humiliated. I wasn't trying to protect my pride, Ethan. I was protecting the evidence until Marcus could secure the chain of custody.""
