Chapter 7 - The Hostile Takeover

Two weeks after the avalanche, I was officially discharged from the hospital. The physical bruises had begun to fade into faint yellowish marks, but the fire inside me was burning hotter than ever. Instead of retreating to hide my grief, I wore a tailored black business suit, pulled my hair into a sleek bun, and walked through the revolving glass doors of Blackwood Global headquarters in New York City.

Reporters lined the perimeter, but Marcus Hayes and four executive bodyguards escorted me safely into the private elevator. We rode straight up to the top floor—the executive boardroom where Ethan had ruled unchallenged for over a decade.

When the heavy double doors opened, all twelve board members were already seated around the massive marble table. At the far end sat Ethan. He had aged ten years in two weeks. His designer suit hung loosely on his shoulders, his hair was unkempt, and the arrogance that once defined him had been replaced by a hollow, defensive glare.

""What is she doing here?"" Ethan barked, pointing a trembling finger at me. ""She isn't an executive. She has no standing in this boardroom until the divorce trial concludes!""

Marcus stepped forward, placing a thick leather-bound binder in the center of the table. ""On the contrary, Mr. Black. Clara is here not as your wife, but as the court-appointed trustee of the reclaimed Vance Shipping assets. Under yesterday’s federal preliminary injunction, all shares acquired through the fraudulent bankruptcy of her father's estate have been placed into an escrow trust under Clara's sole operational control.""

A collective murmur went around the table. The lead independent director, an elderly billionaire named Richard Sterling who had known my father for forty years, adjusted his glasses and looked at me with deep respect.

""Clara,"" Sterling said warmly, ""we have reviewed the forensic audit Marcus provided. It is indisputable. Ethan manipulated the books, diverted your family’s supply lines, and used the liquidated capital to purchase his original forty-two percent stake in this company. As far as this board is concerned, that equity belongs to you.""

""You can't do this!"" Ethan shouted, standing up so abruptly his leather chair tipped over backward. ""I built this empire! I took Blackwood from a mid-tier logistics firm to a multi-billion-dollar global giant! You're handing it over to a woman who hasn't worked an engineering job in ten years!""

I walked slowly down the length of the marble table, stopping directly opposite him. For eleven years, I had lowered my voice, softened my opinions, and played the supportive, quiet wife so his fragile ego could feel superior. I had allowed him to convince me that I was weak.

""I didn't forget how to read blueprints, Ethan,"" I said, my voice steady, resonant, and commanding. ""And I certainly didn't forget how to build what you stole. You didn't build this company with genius. You built it with theft, blackmail, and lies. And today, the foundation has completely crumbled.""

Director Sterling raised his gavel. ""All those in favor of immediately removing Ethan Black as Chairman and installing Clara Black as interim executive chairwoman, please raise your right hand.""

Every single hand at the table went up without hesitation. Ethan looked around the room in absolute disbelief, realizing that the men he considered his loyal puppets had discarded him the moment his power vanished.

""Motion carried,"" Sterling declared, bringing the gavel down with a sharp, final crack. ""Security, please escort Mr. Black from the premises. He is permanently barred from all Blackwood properties.""
