Chapter 5 - The Public Reckoning

Ethan stumbled backward, the color completely drained from his face. ""Clara... whatever you think you found in that cabin, we can settle it. Between us. You don't have to destroy the family name. Everything I built, I built for our future!""

""You didn't build it for our future,"" I replied, my voice slicing through his lies like a scalpel. ""You built it on the wreckage of my father's life. You stole his patents, forged the shipping defaults, and married his grieving daughter so she would never look into the probate audit. You didn't marry me out of love, Ethan. You married me to keep your theft buried.""

""That's a lie!"" Ethan shouted, his composure shattering completely. ""Your father made bad investments! I saved you! I gave you a life of luxury most women would kill for!""

""You left me to die in an avalanche so your mistress could open an eighty-thousand-dollar bracelet on our anniversary,"" I retorted, pointing toward the door. ""Get out of my room. You'll hear from Marcus.""

Ethan lunged toward the bed, desperation turning into frantic aggression, but the door flew open instantly. Two private security guards seized his arms, twisting him back and pinning him against the wall before hauling him out into the corridor. The commotion drew nurses, patients, and several reporters who had managed to slip past the ground-floor security. Cameras flashed as Ethan was dragged down the hallway, screaming threats that only further cemented his reputation as an unstable tyrant.

Within two hours, Marcus Hayes called an emergency press conference in the hospital auditorium.

Dressed in a simple hospital gown covered by a wool cardigan, with visible bandages wrapped around my temple and hands, I sat beside my legal counsel before a packed room of national journalists. Marcus plugged his laptop into the massive projection screen behind us.

First, he played the landline recording. Sophia Lane's unmistakable voice echoed through the auditorium, cruel, arrogant, and mocking, laughing about my impending death in the freezing storm. The room erupted in gasps and furious typing.

Then, Marcus displayed the documents recovered from the collapsed cabin. He presented the high-resolution images of the original forged contracts, the suppressed shipping manifests, and the offshore bank accounts proving that Ethan had systematically embezzled millions from my father's firm before orchestrating a fraudulent bankruptcy.

""Mrs. Clara Black,"" Marcus declared into the microphone, his voice resonating through the silent room, ""is not only filing for immediate divorce on the grounds of extreme cruelty and marital abandonment. As the sole heir to her late father’s estate, she is filing an emergency commercial claim to seize seventy percent of Ethan Black’s controlling shares in Blackwood Global Enterprises, assets which were directly acquired using stolen capital.""

By noon, the story was the number one trending topic worldwide. Social media exploded with millions of comments rallying behind me, demanding justice for the wife left in the cold while condemning Ethan and Sophia. Blackwood Global’s board held an emergency teleconference without Ethan. By market close, trading on the company’s stock was halted, and Ethan was formally stripped of his executive powers.
