Chapter 2 - The Secret Recording

Ethan’s eyes narrowed, shifting instantly from remorse to razor-sharp suspicion. That was the man I had married: an apex predator who viewed every vulnerability as an impending corporate threat. To him, my plea to hide the recording wasn't an act of a traumatized woman trying to protect herself; it was proof that I held a weapon capable of finishing what the first scandal had started.

""Hand it to me,"" Ethan demanded, extending his palm toward the rescue worker. His voice carried the same cold authority he used in high-stakes boardrooms. ""I'm her legal husband. Everything on that phone is marital property, especially if it concerns my family.""

""No,"" I gasped, fighting the heavy oxygen mask strapped across my face as the ambulance doors began to slide shut. ""Ethan, leave it alone. You have taken everything from me. You chose your mistress on our anniversary. Leave me some dignity.""

The paramedic, looking disgusted by Ethan’s complete lack of empathy toward his critically injured wife, tucked the sealed bag into his own jacket pocket. ""This phone is tagged evidence in an ongoing alpine rescue investigation, sir. It goes to the hospital security safe until Mrs. Black is formally discharged and medically cleared. You can follow us to the county hospital, but you are not touching this evidence.""

Ethan stood frozen on the icy tarmac, watching the ambulance tear away with sirens wailing against the gray Colorado sky. He pulled out his phone, his hands visibly shaking as he called his head of corporate security. ""Mark, get every hacker we have on retainer to the Denver regional hospital. Clara recorded a second video before the cabin collapsed. I don't care what it costs or who you have to bribe. I need that file deleted before the press or the board gets their hands on it.""

Inside the ambulance, the heart monitor beeped erratically as the warm IV fluids stung my frozen veins. The paramedic gently patted my shoulder. ""Take it easy, Clara. You're safe now. He can't hurt you here.""

I closed my eyes, letting the tears finally spill past my lashes. They didn't understand. Ethan thought the second video was proof of another affair, or perhaps a hidden financial account that could wipe out his controlling shares in Blackwood Global Enterprises. He had spent years underestimating my intelligence, treating me like a decorative ornament he had plucked from an elite architecture firm a decade ago and locked away in a gilded cage.

He didn't know that when the avalanche hit, the structural failure of the cabin hadn't just exposed old cedar beams. It had smashed open the concealed wall safe built behind the fireplace—a safe Ethan had purchased eight years ago under an offshore shell company. Inside that safe was not jewelry or cash. It contained the real corporate ledgers, original patents, and the audio files of his private conversations regarding the hostile takeover that had bankrupted my father’s shipping firm years ago.

The second video didn't show a dying wife weeping for her broken marriage. It showed me holding up the stamped documents proving that Ethan had orchestrated my family's financial ruin before he even proposed to me. And worse, it captured the audio of Sophia Lane calling the cabin landline ten minutes after the roof caved in, laughing into the receiver, and whispering, ""Enjoy the snow, Clara. He’s never coming back for you.""
