Chapter 9 - The Final Collapse of the Past

Nathaniel walked out of the Vance-Mercer flagship store into the freezing Paris night, his soul completely hollowed out. The cold rain soaked through his coat, but he barely felt the temperature. Caroline’s words echoed relentlessly in his mind: I was only lonely when I was with you.
He realized with unbearable clarity that there was no redemption arc waiting for him. Life was not a romantic tragedy where the arrogant man realizes his errors and is welcomed back with open arms. He had spent three years systematically eroding the soul of a good woman, and she had built a fortress around her new life that he could never penetrate.
He returned to New York three days later, completely defeated. The final remnants of his pride were gone.
Upon landing, he was greeted at his small rental apartment by two federal marshals and an investigator from the state revenue service. The comprehensive audit initiated by Caroline’s attorneys had uncovered secondary corporate tax evasions conducted by his personal wealth management shell company over the past four years.
""Nathaniel Mercer?"" the senior agent asked, presenting a sealed judicial warrant. ""You are required to surrender your passport and accompany us to the federal courthouse for formal processing.""

Brooke, having caught wind of the escalating criminal charges, had already filed a final petition to sever his legal paternity rights, opting for a lump-sum settlement from the remaining Mercer family trust before the government seized the accounts. She wanted nothing to do with a fallen CEO facing public trials and commercial ruin.
As Nathaniel was led out of the residential building in handcuffs, a pack of press photographers flashed their cameras into his face. He didn't hide his head. He didn't shout at the reporters. He simply looked straight ahead into the gray winter sky, remembering the warm dining table he had abandoned on a rainy anniversary evening, and the quiet woman he had foolishly traded away for smoke and mirrors.
