Chapter 2 - Sixty Seconds to Boarding

JFK’s private international terminal was quiet, save for the rhythmic hum of distant jet turbines and the soft clink of porcelain cups behind the velvet-roped lounge. It was half past midnight when my private car pulled up directly along the tarmac line. Rain lightly swept across the dark glass of the terminal windows, blurring the glowing runway lights into sharp streaks of gold and crimson. Beside me, my seasoned attorney, Arthur Sterling, met me with a heavy leather briefcase resting on his knee.
""The paperwork was officially entered into the Manhattan court registry ten minutes ago, Caroline,"" Arthur stated, his voice low, measured, and entirely free of hesitation. ""By nine o'clock tomorrow morning, every financial regulatory agency, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the primary board of directors will receive formal digital service. Once you authorize the public release, the entire world will know Nathaniel Mercer’s pristine domestic facade is completely dead.""
""Not nine tomorrow morning, Arthur,"" I murmured, taking a slow sip of black coffee. ""Right now. Tonight.""
I unlocked my phone, opened my verified social media platform, and navigated to the post draft I had polished days prior. It was paired with the exact, uncropped photograph Graham Foster had sent me hours earlier: Nathaniel, looking anxious outside Brooke’s luxury delivery wing, framed by the unmistakable signage of the hospital’s private maternity ward. Beneath the image, I typed out the caption with steady, deliberate fingers.
“Three years ago today, I vowed to stand beside my husband through every triumph and every challenge. Tonight, on our third wedding anniversary, Nathaniel Mercer chose to fulfill his devotion elsewhere—welcoming his newborn son with his long-time mistress, Brooke Callahan, while abandoning his home. Since he has chosen a new family, I am officially relieving him of his old obligations. The dissolution of our marriage has been filed, and my operational shares in Mercer Holdings are formally frozen pending full corporate audit. I wish them both the life they truly deserve.”
The public announcement was clear, utterly devoid of emotional hysteria, and impossible to refute. It laid out the timeline, the infidelity, and the financial reality in precise, devastating detail. At the same time, I sent an encrypted signal to my media PR team to blast the press release to Bloomberg, Reuters, and every major financial news desk on both coasts.
""Your flight to Charles de Gaulle is fully prepped, Mrs. Mercer,"" the gate agent whispered politely, stepping forward with my boarding pass. ""We have received clearance on the runway. The captain advises boarding within the minute.""
""Sixty seconds,"" I murmured to Arthur, looking at the glowing departure monitor above our heads.
My thumb pressed 'Publish.'

Within twelve seconds, the first wave of notifications erupted across the glass screen like an uncontrolled chain reaction. Retweets doubled every four seconds. Comments poured in by the thousands—shocked gasps from Manhattan high society, urgent shares by prominent venture capitalists, and direct inquiries from board members demanding immediate clarity. The Mercer family name, which Nathaniel had guarded with calculating arrogance, was instantly stripped of its glossy PR veneer and exposed to the harsh light of reality.
I slipped the phone into my coat pocket, handed my boarding pass to the attendant, and turned toward the boarding tunnel. As the heavy pneumatic door sealed closed behind me, shutting out the noise of New York City, I felt a weight vanish from my chest. For three long years, I had been holding my breath, waiting for a man who looked through me. Now, the oxygen rushed back into my lungs, cold and liberating.
