Chapter 5 - The Fall of Mercer Holdings

The following morning felt like an execution. The boardroom on the sixty-second floor of Mercer Holdings was normally a quiet sanctum of immense wealth and commanding authority. Today, it resembled a war room under catastrophic siege.
Nathaniel sat at the head of the long mahogany conference table, his eyes bloodshot, wearing the same wrinkled shirt he had worn to the hospital the night before. Across from him sat the primary board members, their expressions cold, stern, and unforgiving. At the opposite end sat Arthur Sterling, alongside two forensic financial examiners appointed directly by the state’s supreme court.
""Caroline’s terms are non-negotiable, Nathaniel,"" Arthur stated calmly, laying a bound stack of corporate filings across the polished wood. ""Through her family trust, she controls twenty-two percent of voting stock. In light of the public morality clauses attached to your executive charter—clauses you personally signed to reassure institutional investors five years ago—your actions have directly compromised the firm's brand valuation.""
""This is a personal family matter!"" Nathaniel snapped, slamming his fist against the table. ""My private life has nothing to do with the day-to-day operations of this company! The board cannot strip my CEO title based on personal gossip!""
""Personal gossip?"" Julian Vance, the senior-most director who had mentored Nathaniel's late father, leaned forward with a look of pure disgust. ""You used corporate logistics accounts to pay the private maternity fees for your mistress in Manhattan, Nathaniel. You diverted secondary venture capital into a shadow trust registered under Brooke Callahan’s maiden name. Caroline didn't just expose your infidelity; she handed the Securities and Exchange Commission a complete roadmap of your corporate embezzlement.""
Nathaniel’s breath hitched. He turned his head sharply toward his legal counsel, but his lawyers looked down at their papers in defeated silence.
""The audit is already underway,"" Arthur continued, his voice steady and clinical. ""Caroline is not asking for half of your current cash reserves, Nathaniel. She is taking the European distribution arm, the real estate portfolio in Paris and London, and thirty-five percent of the primary holding company’s voting assets to settle the breach of trust. In exchange, she will agree not to press for criminal charges regarding the misappropriated capital.""
""She is gutting me,"" Nathaniel whispered, his voice cracking as he realized the sheer scale of the ambush. ""She is taking the entire international wing. That was my life’s work.""
""No, Nathaniel,"" Julian Vance said coldly, standing up to signify the end of the meeting. ""You gutted yourself the moment you abandoned your wife on your anniversary to play father in a secret ward. By unanimous vote of the executive board, you are hereby placed on indefinite administrative leave. You will clear your personal office by noon.""
Nathaniel sat frozen in his chair as the directors stood up one by one and walked out of the room without offering a single handshake. The empire he had sacrificed his integrity to maintain had collapsed in less than twelve hours.
Meanwhile, across town, Brooke was waiting at his luxury apartment, demanding answers and demanding status. When Nathaniel finally arrived, carrying his personal belongings in a single cardboard box, her welcoming facade shattered instantly.
""What do you mean you've been suspended?"" Brooke screamed, her hands shaking as she held her phone showing the company's tanking market cap. ""What about the trust fund for Harrison? What about our wedding plans? You promised me that once Caroline was out of the picture, we would take over the penthouse!""
Nathaniel looked at Brooke—really looked at her—for the first time in years. Without the thrill of secrecy, without the illicit excitement of sneaking away from his marriage, she seemed completely different. Her eyes were sharp with financial anxiety, her voice grating and demanding. There was no warmth, no grace, and no genuine comfort.
""The trust fund is frozen by the court, Brooke,"" Nathaniel said quietly, his voice hollow and exhausted. ""The penthouse belongs to Caroline's family trust. We have to vacate by Friday.""
May you like
Brooke took a slow step backward, her expression twisting into cold resentment. ""You fool,"" she hissed. ""You let her take everything.""
Nathaniel looked down at his shoes, realizing with crushing certainty that the only person who had ever truly loved him for who he was, and not what he owned, was currently halfway across the Atlantic Ocean.
