Chapter 3 - The Hallway of Reckoning

At the exact moment my post went live, Nathaniel was pacing the gleaming hardwood floor of Brooke’s recovery room. The newborn baby, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket, slept quietly in a transparent acrylic bassinet beside the bed. Brooke lay propped against ivory pillows, her face flushed, looking at Nathaniel with an expectant, possessive smile.

""He has your eyes, Nate,"" Brooke whispered, reaching her hand out toward his tailored sleeve. ""We finally did it. You don't have to keep pretending anymore. The baby is here, and we can finally be a real family. Caroline will just have to accept it.""

Nathaniel didn't reach back. Instead, his brow furrowed as his personal phone—the private line reserved exclusively for tier-one board members and his closest executive circle—began buzzing violently against his chest. It didn't ring once; it vibrated continuously, a manic rhythm of panicked calls and flashing notification banners that lit up the darkened room.

""What is that?"" Brooke asked, her soft tone tightening with sudden irritation. ""Turn it off, Nate. This is our night. Don't let your office ruin our first moments together.""

Nathaniel pulled the device from his jacket, preparing to dismiss the intrusion, but froze. The screen was flooded with over fifty missed calls from Graham, eight urgent voicemails from the chairman of Mercer Holdings’ audit committee, and dozens of headline alerts from major global publications.

His eyes locked onto the primary alert from Bloomberg: Mercer Holdings In Turmoil: Caroline Mercer Announces Divorce Amid Secret Birth Scandal, Board In Crisis.

His breath caught sharply in his throat. He opened the social application with trembling hands. There, pinned to the top of trending feeds worldwide, was the photograph of him outside the delivery ward. And beneath it, Caroline’s cold, dignified words, cutting through three years of deceit with surgical precision.

""No,"" Nathaniel breathed, his voice cracking into a harsh whisper. ""No, this is impossible. She didn't know. She was at home... she was waiting for dinner.""

""Nate? What are you talking about?"" Brooke sat up abruptly, wincing from the sudden movement. ""What does Caroline have to do with this right now?""

""She knows,"" Nathaniel said, turning around to face her, his face completely drained of color. ""She knew everything, Brooke. The hospital, the baby, the offshore trust... she posted it to the world. She filed the divorce. She froze the liquidity accounts.""

Before Brooke could answer, Graham Foster burst through the double doors of the private maternity suite, breathless and clutching an iPad showing freefalling stock tickers.

""Mr. Mercer! The board has just convened an emergency midnight session,"" Graham gasped, his eyes darting uncomfortably between Brooke and his boss. ""Our European trading partners are dumping our shares in pre-market exchanges. The stock is down fourteen percent in half an hour. Mrs. Mercer... she’s at JFK. Her private flight to Paris departs in twenty minutes. If she leaves the country with those trust voting rights, the board will vote for your immediate suspension at sunrise!""

Nathaniel stood motionless, his mind reeling as the reality crashed down on him. Caroline wasn't crying over cold roast beef in their penthouse. She had outplayed him. She had calculated every single move while he thought he was pulling the strings.

""Get the car,"" Nathaniel roared, dropping the phone onto the bedside table and lunging toward the door, completely ignoring Brooke’s frantic cries from the bed behind him. ""Get the car to JFK now!""
