Chapter 7 - The Desperate Pilgrimage

Winter arrived in Manhattan with a bitter, unforgiving cold. For Nathaniel, the days had blurred into a humiliating routine of legal depositions, financial audits, and solitary dinners in a modest rental apartment on the East Side.

Mercer Holdings had survived, but Nathaniel was no longer its sovereign ruler. The board had stripped him of his executive authority, leaving him with an advisory title and a drastically diminished equity stake. Brooke had moved to New Jersey with her mother and the baby, communicating with him only through bitter, automated text messages demanding monthly child maintenance payments. The intoxicating fantasy of a joyful family life had evaporated, leaving behind only transactional resentment.

Every night, Nathaniel would sit alone with a bottle of scotch, staring at Caroline’s public social accounts. She had never posted a single word of anger after the divorce. There were no petty insults, no interviews detailing his betrayal, and no public victimhood.

Instead, her feed showcased an astonishing rebirth. There she was, standing on the red carpet at the Paris Fashion Week gala, radiant in an emerald silk dress she had designed herself, surrounded by international tastemakers and smiling warmly beside Gabriel Laurent. She looked happier, healthier, and more stunning than she had ever appeared during their entire marriage.

""She built that with my assets,"" Nathaniel muttered to himself one snowy evening, his hands trembling as he stared at the screen. But deep down, he knew it was a lie. Caroline had built her new empire with her own vision, her own dignity, and her own unmatched resilience. He had merely been the dead weight holding her back.

He couldn't take the silence any longer. The realization that she had erased him entirely—that he didn't even register as an enemy in her mind—drove him mad with regret.

He booked a commercial flight to Paris the following morning.

When Nathaniel arrived in the French capital, it was raining, much like the night she had left him at JFK. He stood across the street from the newly inaugurated Vance-Mercer flagship store on Avenue Montaigne, watching the crowd of high-society guests and fashion journalists entering the brightly lit glass building.

Through the massive display windows, he saw her. Caroline was standing near a marble podium, laughing gracefully as she spoke with a group of European dignitaries. She wore a tailored ivory suit that radiated effortless authority. Beside her stood Gabriel Laurent, looking at her with a gentle, protective pride that pierced Nathaniel’s heart like a rusted blade.

Nathaniel gathered his coat around him and crossed the wet street, his heart thumping violently against his ribs. He pushed past the doorman, who looked at his disheveled coat with immediate suspicion.

""Caroline,"" Nathaniel called out, his voice shaking.

The conversation near the podium quieted. Caroline turned slowly, her smile fading into a look of calm, polite curiosity as her eyes found his.
