Chapter 8 - The Price of Discarded Love

""Nathaniel?"" Caroline’s voice was completely level, without a tremor of shock, anger, or fear. It was the tone one might use for an unexpected courier delivering a package.

Nathaniel stepped forward, his eyes desperately searching her face for any trace of the woman who used to wait for him by the window with dinner on the table. But the submissive, lonely wife was gone. In her place stood a formidable, elegant woman who looked at him as though he were a distant stranger.

""Can we please speak privately?"" Nathaniel begged, ignoring the hushed whispers breaking out among the surrounding guests. ""Just five minutes, Caroline. That’s all I ask. Five minutes.""

Gabriel immediately stepped forward, placing himself subtly between Nathaniel and Caroline, his jaw set firmly. ""Monsieur, this is a private corporate reception. You are intruding.""

""It's alright, Gabriel,"" Caroline said softly, touching Gabriel’s arm with a gentle familiarity that made Nathaniel flinch. ""Give us a moment in the study.""

Caroline led him into a private conference room away from the main floor, closing the frosted glass door behind them. She did not sit down, nor did she invite him to sit. She stood with her arms lightly crossed, waiting.

""You look incredible, Caroline,"" Nathaniel began, his voice breaking. ""I... I had to see you. I had to tell you how deeply sorry I am. The night Harrison was born... it was the biggest mistake of my life. Brooke meant nothing to me. It was an old habit, an ego trip, a delusion. The moment you walked out of my life, everything fell apart.""

""I know,"" Caroline replied simply. ""I read the financial papers.""

""I don't care about the money!"" Nathaniel took an impulsive step forward, his hands outstretched in supplication. ""Take all of it! Take the rest of the company! I don't care about the board or the shares anymore. I just want my wife back. I realized too late that you were the only real thing in my life. I'll move to Paris. I'll carry your bags, I'll work under you, I'll do whatever it takes to earn your forgiveness. Just give me one more chance.""

Caroline looked at him, and for a fleeting second, a look of profound pity crossed her face.

""Nathaniel,"" she said gently, her voice as steady as granite, ""you don't love me. You never loved me.""

""That's not true! I love you more than my own life!""

""No,"" she said, shaking her head slowly. ""You loved having a devoted woman sitting at home, waiting for you, enduring your neglect, and validating your ego. You loved the idea that no matter how horribly you treated me, I would always be there to pick up the pieces when you returned. What hurts you right now isn't the loss of my love—it's the shock of realizing that I chose myself over you.""

""Caroline, please—"" Tears welled in Nathaniel’s eyes, spilling over his cheeks without restraint. The powerful, untouchable billionaire was reduced to a weeping shell in the center of her showroom.

""That night on our anniversary, when you sent me that five-word text message, you made your final choice,"" Caroline continued, her voice firm and resolute. ""You chose Brooke. You chose your secret life. You left me with cold dishes on the table, assuming I was too weak to survive without you. But the truth is, Nathaniel, leaving you was the easiest decision I ever made. I was only lonely when I was with you. Now, I am finally free.""

She reached out and turned the doorknob, opening the door back to the brightly lit gallery.

""Please leave now, Nathaniel. And do not ever contact me again.""
