Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The federal trial of Sophia Carter was swift and merciless.

Stripped of Vincent’s money and legal influence, Sophia had to rely on a court-appointed public defender. The courtroom was packed with international media, eager to witness the downfall of the woman who had shattered high society.

I attended the sentencing hearing in person, sitting in the front row of the gallery, dressed in an understated charcoal dress. Beside me sat Daniel, holding a leather briefcase containing the final disposition of Astraea's charitable foundations.

Sophia entered the courtroom in an orange prison jumpsuit, her wrists and ankles shackled. Her once-glamorous blonde hair was dull and greasy, pulled back into a messy bun. Her skin was sallow, devoid of the expensive serums and makeup she had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on.

When she saw me sitting in the gallery, her eyes flared with psychotic rage.

""You!"" she screamed, thrashing against the bailiffs who held her chains. ""You destroyed my life! You planned this! You're a monster, Anna!""

The judge banged his gavel furiously. ""Order in the court! One more outburst from the defendant and she will be removed from the proceedings!""

Sophia slumped into the defense chair, sobbing uncontrollably. The evidence presented by federal prosecutors was insurmountable: fake invoices, laundered shell companies, forged signatures, and tax evasion totaling over twenty-five million dollars. But the final nail in her coffin was the newly released audio from the jet’s black box, which demonstrated her criminal negligence and deliberate manipulation during an aviation emergency.

The judge adjusted his spectacles, his expression filled with cold disdain as he looked down at Sophia from the bench.

""Miss Carter, your conduct demonstrates a level of calculated narcissism and moral bankruptcy rarely seen in this court. You manipulated a tragic disaster to secure your own financial standing, and you stole millions meant for pediatric medical charities to fund your lavish lifestyle.""

The judge paused, letting the silence settle over the courtroom.

""On counts one through seven of wire fraud, grand larceny, and tax conspiracy, I sentence you to eighteen years at the Hazelton Federal Correctional Institution, with no possibility of parole before serving eighty-five percent of your term. Furthermore, full restitution of twenty-six million dollars is ordered immediately.""

The gavel came down with a heavy, final thud.

Sophia wailed, collapsing onto the defense table. ""No! Please! Vincent, help me! Vincent!""

She called for the man she had destroyed, but Vincent wasn't there. He had refused to testify on her behalf. He had refused to even answer her letters from detention.

As the bailiffs hauled Sophia toward the side exit, she locked eyes with me one last time. I didn't scowl. I didn't gloat. I simply looked at her with utter indifference—the same indifference she had shown toward my unborn child while smoke filled the aircraft.

She vanished behind the heavy steel doors, her hysterical screams fading into the holding cells below.

Outside the courthouse, Daniel and I walked down the granite steps into the crisp autumn breeze.

""The paperwork for the restructured company is finalized,"" Daniel reported, opening the passenger door of our car. ""Moretti Dynamics has been officially rebranded as Bennett Aerospace. The defense contracts have been fully reinstated under your name, and seventy percent of the annual profits are now permanently routed to medical clinics specializing in burn survivors and emergency pediatric care.""

""Good,"" I said, stepping inside. ""It's time to go home, Daniel.""

""Singapore?""

""Yes,"" I smiled, feeling the heavy knot in my chest untangle completely for the first time in three years. ""My daughter is waiting for me.""
