Chapter 5 - Unmasked

Sophia shrieked, dropping her leather notebook to the carpeted floor. She backed up until her shoulders hit the wall, her eyes bulging in sheer terror as she pointed a trembling finger at me.

""A-Anna?!"" Sophia stammered, her voice shrill and unhinged. ""No... that's impossible! You died! You burned in the jet! Vincent saw you burn!""

Vincent didn't utter a sound. He stood paralyzed, his lips parted, his skin the color of dry parchment. He stared at me as if a phantom had torn through the fabric of reality to drag him straight to hell. His hands began to shake uncontrollably.

""Anna..."" he finally whispered, a pathetic, strangled sound. He took a stumbling step forward, his chest heaving. ""Anna... you're alive? My God... you're alive!""

He moved toward me, his arms reaching out instinctively, driven by a sudden, desperate surge of raw emotion. But before he could take three steps, Daniel stepped forward, his hand resting firmly on the butt of the sidearm beneath his coat.

""Take another step toward Mrs. Vance, Mr. Moretti, and my men will neutralize you,"" Daniel said with absolute lethality.

Vincent halted, his wide eyes darting between Daniel and me. ""Daniel? You were on the flight manifest... you were reported dead alongside her!"" Then his gaze returned to me, searching my features, hungry, confused, and shattered. ""Anna, please. What is this? Why did you hide from me? Do you have any idea what I went through? The guilt... the agony...""

I let out a soft, mocking laugh that echoed through the vast boardroom. It was not the laugh of the meek girl who used to wait for him by the window on late work nights. It was the laugh of an executioner listening to a condemned man plead for mercy.

""What you went through, Vincent?"" I asked, leaning forward, resting my elbows on the polished marble. ""Did you feel the smoke searing your lungs? Did you feel the terror of being strapped to a chair while the metal buckled around you? Did you endure emergency labor in a backroom clinic with second-degree burns across your skin, wondering if your child would survive the night?""

The entire room seemed to freeze.

Vincent’s breath caught in his throat. He staggered, his eyes dropping to my flat stomach, then rising back to my face with horrifying realization.

""The baby..."" Vincent’s voice broke completely, tears spilling unbidden down his cheeks. ""The baby survived?""

Sophia suddenly stepped forward, her panic transforming into venomous outrage. ""She’s lying, Vincent! It’s a trick! She staged her disappearance to steal your money! Look at her clothes, look at this security! She probably planned the crash herself!""

""Silence her,"" I commanded quietly, not even glancing at Sophia.

Two of my security officers stepped forward instantly, seizing Sophia’s arms and shoving her hard into a leather conference chair. Sophia gasped, struggling against their iron grip, but they held her pinned.

""To answer your question, Vincent,"" I continued calmly, opening the black folder in front of me. ""Yes. Our daughter survived. Her name is Valerie. She is three years old, healthy, brilliant, and completely untainted by your bloodline.""

Vincent dropped to his knees right there on the carpet, burying his face in his hands as a violent sob racked his body. ""A daughter... I have a daughter...""

""You have nothing,"" I corrected sharply. ""You forfeited the right to be a father the second you unclipt your seatbelt, walked past your pregnant wife, and carried your mistress out the door.""

""I was coming back for you!"" Vincent roared through his tears, lifting his head, his eyes bloodshot and wild. ""I swear to God, Anna, I was coming back! The explosion happened before I could reach the door! I thought you were dead! If I had known—""

""If you had known?"" I interrupted, my tone freezing the room. ""You shouldn't have had to know, Vincent. A man protects his family first. You chose Sophia because in your pathetic, selfish heart, she was your trophy, and I was merely your dutiful housekeeper. You thought I would wait forever. You thought I was helpless.""

I pushed a document across the table. It slid smoothly, stopping an inch from his trembling knees.

""What is this?"" he whispered.

""That is the master acquisition offer for Moretti Dynamics,"" I said. ""I am Elena Vance. I own fifty-one percent of Astraea Global. I control every ounce of rare-earth alloy you need to fulfill Aegis-One. And as of this morning, I have purchased sixty-two percent of your company's secondary debt from JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley.""

May you like

Vincent stared at the document, then looked up at me in horror. ""You... you bought my debt?""

""I don't just hold your supply chain, Vincent,"" I smiled, a cold, glorious smile. ""I own you.""
