Chapter 1 - The Smoke That Cleared My Eyes

Daniel Reyes did not hesitate. His grease-stained jacket was already torn at the shoulder, but his hands were steady as he kicked the rusted latch of the rear service hatch. The smell of burning aviation fuel was sharp, stinging my nostrils and turning my stomach inside out. Another violent cramp seized my abdomen, dragging a silent cry up my throat. I pressed one trembling hand against my swollen belly, feeling our daughter kick frantically against my palm. She was fighting to live, even as her biological father abandoned her for a ghost from his youth.

""Come on, Mrs. Moretti,"" Daniel urged, his voice firm over the wail of emergency sirens outside. ""The right wing tank is leaking. If the electrical harness catches, this entire fuselage is going up in seconds.""

""Vincent..."" The name slipped past my lips, bitter as bile.

""Mr. Moretti took Miss Carter to the emergency medical van on the tarmac,"" Daniel said bluntly, not sparing me the agonizing truth. ""He's not looking back, ma'am. You have to save yourself.""

Those words struck harder than the crash landing. Vincent wasn't looking back. He had made his vow to love and protect me until death, but when faced with mortal terror, his instinct chose Sophia Carter. He had handed me empty platitudes—promises of coming back, assurances that there was plenty of time—while prioritizing another woman's scratched forehead over his wife and unborn child.

I took a shuddering breath, swallowed the tears that threatened to blind me, and grabbed Daniel’s outstretched hand. Together, we squeezed through the narrow maintenance doorway just beneath the tail assembly. We dropped onto the gravel beside the runway, the impact jarring my swollen ankles. Pain rippled up my spine, but the surge of pure adrenaline forced my feet to move.

Daniel shielded my body with his own as we scrambled behind a row of concrete blast walls. Less than thirty seconds later, a deafening roar shattered the sky. An orange fireball erupted from the center cabin, blowing out the very windows I had been strapped beside moments earlier. Shrapnel clattered against the tarmac like deadly hail.

Through the rising heat waves and thick black plumes, I saw Vincent across the runway. He was dropping to his knees, his hands clutching his head in utter, helpless despair as he watched the jet consumed by roaring flames. Beside him, wrapped in an emergency blanket and clutching his shoulder, was Sophia. She was weeping into his neck, leaning her weight against him, while Vincent stared at the inferno believing he had just watched his wife and child burn alive.

He opened his mouth, screaming my name into the wind. But it was far too late.

""Mrs. Moretti, we need to get you to a private clinic right now,"" Daniel whispered urgently, checking the perimeter. ""If you go to the municipal hospital, the Moretti family security team will take you, hide what happened, and Vincent will spin the press.""

Daniel was right. Vincent’s family empire thrived on public relations. They would paint Vincent as a tragic hero who tried his best, buried under grief, while sweeping his grotesque cowardice under the rug. I looked down at my hands, smudged with soot and oil. The diamond wedding ring—a five-carat perfection that had symbolized my fairy-tale marriage—felt like a pair of iron handcuffs.

I slowly twisted the platinum band off my finger and let it drop into the runway dust.

""Anna Bennett Moretti died in that plane,"" I told Daniel, my voice turning to steel as the contractions grew fiercer. ""Help me leave this city, Daniel. Help me disappear, and I swear on my child's life, I will reward your loyalty ten times over.""

Daniel nodded once, his eyes full of respect. He flagged down an unmarked airfield supply van, ushering me into the back. As the vehicle sped away through the perimeter gates, I leaned back against the hard metal wall, breathing through the agony in my womb. I had survived the fire. Vincent Moretti had thought I was weak, a compliant wife who would wait forever for his scraps of affection. He was about to learn that when a woman loses everything, she becomes untouchable.
