Chapter 3 - The Ghost In The Boardroom

Thirty-six months passed. To the elite circles of New York and London, Anna Bennett was a tragic memory, a footnote in the illustrious biography of Vincent Moretti.
Vincent had thrived outwardly. He had expanded Moretti Dynamics into governmental defense contracts, pouring billions into a revolutionary drone defense framework codenamed Aegis-One. He had become the darling of Wall Street, and rumors circulated that he had finally proposed to Sophia Carter, though the wedding was constantly delayed by mysterious supply chain bottlenecks.
Those bottlenecks were not an accident. They were my design.
From my glass penthouse overlooking Marina Bay in Singapore, I had transformed myself. The soft, accommodating woman who used to adjust Vincent’s ties and overlook his cold dismissals was gone. In her place stood the executive chairperson of Astraea Global: Elena Vance, a woman known across international financial hubs as an unyielding, phantom titan who never appeared on camera, operating strictly through trusted proxies and encrypted signatures.
Valerie was now three years old, a bright, spirited girl with jet-black curls and radiant hazel eyes. She knew Daniel as her protector and uncle, and she knew me as her entire world. She had never heard the name Vincent Moretti, and she never would until the day I destroyed his legacy.
""Anna, the quarterly audit on Moretti Dynamics is complete,"" Daniel said, walking into my office suite. He wore a tailored suit now, carrying the composure of a chief operating officer rather than an airfield mechanic. He placed a thick leather portfolio on my desk. ""Vincent is overleveraged by four billion dollars. He took out massive institutional loans to fund Aegis-One, backed by government delivery deadlines.""
""And the core raw material?"" I asked, sipping my black coffee.
""They need twenty thousand metric tons of refined neodymium-dysprosium alloy by the end of next month, or they default on the federal contract,"" Daniel replied, a grim smile touching his lips. ""There is only one supplier on the planet capable of delivering that volume on such short notice.""
""Astraea Global.""
""Exactly. Vincent has requested a direct summit with Astraea’s board. He’s flying to our regional headquarters in Manhattan next Tuesday. He has no idea who owns the company. He thinks he’s meeting an anonymous Swiss investment syndicate.""
I stood up and walked to the panoramic window, watching the cargo ships glide along the Singapore Strait. The trap was set. Vincent was desperate. If he failed to secure this alloy, the federal government would revoke Moretti Dynamics’ defense clearance, triggering debt acceleration clauses across six major investment banks. His company would face immediate liquidation.
""Is Sophia accompanying him?"" I asked quietly.
""She’s his Chief Communications Officer now,"" Daniel sneered. ""She travels everywhere with him. She insists on sitting in on every major contract negotiation.""
A cold thrill surged through my veins. ""Perfect. I wouldn't want her to miss the party.""
""Are you certain you're ready for this, Anna? Seeing him face-to-face after three years?""
I turned back to Daniel, my expression devoid of the warmth I reserved only for my daughter. ""Three years ago, I almost burned alive because Vincent Moretti decided Sophia Carter’s skin was more precious than my life and my child’s existence. I have spent every waking minute of these past three years preparing for this meeting. I am not going there to hide, Daniel. I am going there to collect what he owes.""
""What about Valerie?""
""Valerie stays here under heavy guard with her nannies until I return. When I come back, the Moretti name will be reduced to ash, and our daughter will inherit the world without ever having to fear her father’s shadow.""

I opened the portfolio and looked at Vincent's recent photograph. He had gained a few silver strands at his temples; his jaw was set with the arrogant pride of a man who believed he owned the world.
He thought he had conquered fate. He thought his only sin was an unavoidable tragedy in a burning plane. But retribution doesn't forget, and it doesn't forgive.
