Chapter 2 - Born From The Ashes

The birth took place in a small, unlicensed medical sanctuary forty miles outside the city, funded through an anonymous offshore account that my late grandfather had set up for me years before my wedding. Vincent had never known about that trust; he had always assumed I was just a modest interior designer who won the jackpot by capturing his billionaire heart. He had never bothered to look beneath the surface of the woman who shared his bed.

When my daughter took her first breath, she didn't whimper. She let out a sharp, resonant cry that filled the small room, asserting her presence in a world that had tried to extinguish her before she began. The midwife wiped her clean and placed her against my bare chest.

""She has your eyes,"" Daniel murmured from the doorway, keeping watch over the corridor with a loaded sidearm.

""Her name is Valerie,"" I whispered, touching the baby's soft cheek. Valerie meant strength, valor. She would never carry the Moretti name. She would never know the coward who walked away while she was trapped in smoke. ""Valerie Bennett.""

Over the next two weeks, while my body slowly repaired itself, I watched the world from a secure satellite laptop. Vincent had orchestrated a spectacle of grief. The media was flooded with photographs of him in a bespoke black suit, dark circles beneath his eyes, standing before an empty bronze casket at a memorial service attended by high society. He looked broken, a tragic widower robbed of his beautiful wife and unborn heir.

And right beside him, dressed in subtle charcoal, offering her gentle hand to support him, was Sophia Carter.

The press lauded their bond: Tragic Billionaire Leans on Childhood Sweetheart Following Fatal Jet Crash. The headlines made me sick to my stomach. Sophia had moved into our penthouse within seven days of the memorial service under the guise of helping him cope with his trauma. It was an insult to my memory, an insult to our child, and a sickening testament to Vincent’s true nature.

""They filed the death certificate yesterday,"" Daniel reported, setting a cup of herbal tea beside my bed. ""Under the maritime and aviation missing persons statute, your legal existence has been terminated. Your assets in Moretti Holdings were absorbed into his personal accounts.""

""Let him have them,"" I said, cold fury pulsing through my veins. ""Money stolen from ghosts has a way of turning into poison.""

""What is our next move, Anna?""

I looked at my sleeping daughter, whose tiny fingers were curled tight around my thumb. ""We leave the country tonight. Switzerland first, then Singapore. My grandfather left me more than just money, Daniel. He left me controlling equity shares in the sovereign mining consortium, Astraea Global, hidden under three shell corporations.""

Daniel’s eyes widened. Astraea Global was the largest supplier of rare-earth metals to the global automotive and aerospace sectors. Vincent’s entire aerospace empire, Moretti Dynamics, relied on raw rare-earth minerals to manufacture their next-generation guidance systems and jet turbines.

Vincent had spent years trying to discover who owned the elusive fifty-one percent stake in Astraea Global, never realizing the woman who cooked his breakfast and folded his shirts held the master key to his supply chain. My grandfather had warned me never to reveal my leverage until I needed it to defend my life.

That time had arrived.

""I need you to manage our security operations,"" I told Daniel, looking him dead in the eye. ""I need men who are loyal to the death, systems that cannot be hacked, and a wall of silence that not even Moretti's billions can breach.""

""Consider it done,"" Daniel said, offering a crisp nod.

As we boarded an unmarked cargo transport bound for Zurich under torrential rain, I held Valerie against my chest beneath a heavy wool cloak. I turned my eyes toward the skyline where the gleaming Moretti Dynamics tower pierced the clouds.

Enjoy your sorrow and your comfort, Vincent, I thought silently, watching the city lights blur into streaks of silver. Live your comfortable life with Sophia. Build your empire higher. Because the higher you climb, the harder you will fall when I pull the foundation out from beneath your feet.
