Chapter 7 - A Clean Break

The morning after the gala, Boston media was ablaze with the scandal. Headlines splashed across morning news networks: BILLIONAIRE HEIR PUBLICLY DUMPED AFTER MOTHER EXPOSES SOCIALITE FIANCÉE'S TRANSPLANT FRAUD. Stock prices for the Reed family’s luxury holdings plummeted thirty percent before noon, while Brooks Atelier became an overnight household name.
Hannah spent the morning at Eleanor Callahan's private seaside residence in Marblehead. The elderly matriarch sat on the terrace wrapped in a cashmere throw, pouring black tea into porcelain cups with steady hands.
""I imagine my son has spent the last twelve hours leaving hundreds of messages on your office line,"" Eleanor said, handing Hannah a cup.
""Maya blocked his new number,"" Hannah replied with a faint smile. ""He also sent three dozen white lilies to the studio. I had them donated to the children's ward at Harborline.""
Eleanor gave a dry, appreciative laugh. ""Good girl. Reid is my son, and I love him, but I raised him with too much entitlement. He inherited his father’s obsession with appearances. He believed that everything in this world could be bought or smoothed over with an apology and a wire transfer. You gave him the one lesson his trust fund couldn't protect him from: absolute consequence.""
""Why did you do it so publicly, Eleanor?"" Hannah asked. ""You could have handled Vanessa quietly. The scandal cost your family’s board a lot of uncomfortable meetings today.""
Eleanor reached across the table, her warm hand gently covering Hannah’s. ""Because you allowed surgeons to cut into your body for me in complete silence, Hannah. You endured the whispers, the insults, and my son’s cowardly arrogance without uttering a single complaint. If you were willing to bleed for me in the dark, the least I could do was give you your honor in the bright, unforgiving light.""
Eleanor pulled a heavy manila folder from her side table and placed it before Hannah.
""What is this?"" Hannah asked.
""The deed to the historic Cabot Mill in Rhode Island, along with an unrestricted seed grant of four million dollars from my personal charitable trust,"" Eleanor said firmly. ""You have talent that outclasses every commercial designer in this state. The textile industry needs artists with integrity. Do not insult me by refusing it. It is not payment for an organ—no amount of money could ever repay a life. It is an investment in a woman I respect.""
Hannah looked at the documents. For years, she had dreamed of restoring a historic water-powered textile mill, converting it into a zero-waste, sustainable artisan weaving hub. Reid had always dismissed it as an unprofitable hobby.

Hannah took a slow breath, closed the folder, and met Eleanor’s eyes. ""I will accept the deed as a joint venture partnership, Eleanor. You get a twenty percent equity stake in the mill, and Brooks Atelier retains full creative control.""
Eleanor’s eyes lit up with genuine delight. ""Deal. Now, pack your bags and get out of Boston before my pathetic son finds out where you're staying.""
