Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Socialite

The ballroom descended into chaotic fury. Photographers who had been hired to capture a high-society romance were now frantically snapping photos of Vanessa Reed cowering beneath the glaring stage lights. Socialites who had kissed Vanessa's cheeks minutes earlier took two deliberate steps backward, isolating her like a plague victim.
""Reid, listen to me!"" Vanessa shrieked, clutching his sleeve in sheer desperation. ""I never claimed I was on that table! The media drew their own conclusions! I was trying to protect your family's dignity! Your mother needed a story the board could believe, not some tacky scandal about a lower-class girlfriend donating an organ for cash!""
""Shut up,"" Reid said.
His voice was so dead, so hollow, that Vanessa snapped her mouth shut in terror. Reid pulled his arm away from her as if her skin were coated in acid. The gold heirloom bracelet slid down her wrist.
Eleanor stepped forward, extending her hand. ""That bracelet belonged to my grandmother, Vanessa. Take it off.""
Vanessa’s trembling hands fumbled with the clasp. When she couldn't open it fast enough, Eleanor’s personal security guard stepped forward, cleanly unhooking the antique chain and handing it directly to Eleanor.
""You have five minutes to leave this hotel,"" Eleanor said without an ounce of remorse. ""Tomorrow morning, Callahan Enterprises will liquidate every shared stock holding with the Reed family. The press statement correcting your fraud has already been released to the Associated Press. Run along, Vanessa. Your fifteen minutes have expired.""
Vanessa turned and fled through the ballroom doors, her heels clicking frantically against the marble as camera flashes followed her every sobbing step down the corridor.
The room remained utterly silent. Reid turned to face Hannah, his tall frame visibly shaking. The arrogance, the pristine polish, the calculated Boston reserve—all of it was stripped away, leaving only a broken, horrified man.
""Hannah,"" Reid begged, taking a step toward her, his eyes shining with unshed tears. ""You gave your kidney... to my mother? While I was holding Vanessa? While I told you to leave the hospital?""
Hannah stood completely still, watching him with calm, untouchable composure. ""I didn't do it for you, Reid. I did it because your mother needed to live. And because, unlike you, I don't calculate someone's value based on what society thinks they look like next to me.""
""I was blind,"" Reid gasped, dropping to one knee right in the middle of the ballroom floor, careless of the hundreds of elite eyes watching his total humiliation. ""Please. Hannah, I love you. I have loved you since the day you walked into my life. I will get on my knees every day for the rest of my life. Marry me. Let me make this right. I'll give up the firm, I'll move wherever you want, just don't look at me like I'm a stranger.""

Hannah looked down at the man who had hidden her in dark corners for ten months. She felt no anger. She felt no desire for revenge. She only felt the absolute, magnificent freedom of knowing she had outgrown him completely.
""Stand up, Reid,"" Hannah said softly, shaking her head. ""You don't love me. You just finally realized what you lost. And you can't afford me anymore.""
