Chapter 2 - The Mask of the Savior

Forty-eight hours later, the private VIP wing of Harborline Medical Center was humming with high-society tension. Eleanor Callahan lay propped up in a silk-sheeted adjustable hospital bed, her skin carrying the gray, ash-tinted hue of advanced end-stage renal failure. Reid sat in the corner armchair, scrolling frantically through unread emails on his tablet, his eyes dark with sleep deprivation and simmering irritation.

""She still hasn't answered,"" Reid muttered, rubbing his temple. ""Hannah's phone is completely turned off. Her assistant claimed she took an unexpected design retreat to upstate New York. Who abandons their partner during a family medical crisis?""

Vanessa Reed swept into the room holding a massive vase of rare white orchids, placing them delicately on the marble console. She wore an ivory cashmere wrap and a face sculpted with practiced sorrow. ""Reid, darling, you have to stop blaming yourself. Hannah simply comes from a different world. People outside our circle panic when real crises hit. She doesn’t have the pedigree or the emotional stamina to handle a family emergency like this.""

Eleanor Callahan turned her head slowly, her tired, hazel eyes landing heavily on Vanessa. ""And you do, Vanessa? You spent three weeks avoiding my phone calls until the press picked up the story about my dialysis.""

Vanessa offered a fragile, rehearsed smile. ""Eleanor, you know I’ve been coordinating with the foundation. I’ve been speaking to private specialists in Switzerland.""

""Talk is remarkably cheap,"" Eleanor said dryly, though her breath was shallow. ""Dr. Foster says the anonymous donor arrived at dawn. All preliminary crossmatching was completed an hour ago. Whoever this stranger is, they are giving me five more years of life. That is more loyalty than the entire Callahan board has shown me in six months.""

A nurse entered the room with a clipboard. ""Mr. Callahan? The surgical team has taken your mother’s prep order. The donor is already in Operating Room 4. We are prepping Mrs. Callahan now.""

Outside the operating theater, separated by two sets of double-glazed privacy glass and strict isolation curtains, Hannah Brooks was breathing through an oxygen mask. The operating room was freezing, the massive stainless steel surgical lights casting sharp reflections. Dr. Foster stood over her, gently squeezing her hand.

""Last chance, Hannah,"" Dr. Foster murmured through her blue surgical mask. ""The IV is in. We begin general anesthesia in two minutes.""

Hannah looked up at the ceiling tiles. She thought about her childhood, her stubborn independence, and the countless times she had been told she took up too much space. Reid had loved her in secret because he was terrified of society’s whispers. But lying on this sterile table, stripped of clothes, jewelry, and social status, she was more than enough. Her body possessed the biological miracle that Reid’s millions couldn't buy.

""Put me under, doctor,"" Hannah whispered.

The warm sting of propofol rushed through the IV in the back of her hand. The bright lights blurred into a swirl of white and silver.

Three hours later, Dr. Foster carried a chilled surgical transport container across the sterile corridor into Operating Room 2. The graft was perfect. Eleanor Callahan’s surgical team worked with mechanical precision, suturing arteries with micro-surgical thread. Within forty minutes of connection, the transplanted kidney pinked up instantly, producing clear urine on the operating table.

""Graft function is immediate and exceptional,"" the chief surgeon announced, glancing up at the wall clock. ""Let’s close her up.""

In the VIP waiting lounge, Reid stood when the surgeon stepped through the swinging double doors. Vanessa stood right beside him, immediately looping her fingers through his arm in a display of unified solidarity.

""The surgery was an absolute triumph,"" the surgeon announced, taking off his surgical cap. ""Your mother took to the new organ immediately. She is in the recovery suite and should be awake within three hours.""

Reid released a ragged, shaking breath, running both hands over his face. ""And the donor? Can I see them? I need to thank them. I’ll cover every expense, write a check for their recovery, anything they need.""

May you like

""The donor exercised their legal right to total anonymity,"" the surgeon replied curtly. ""They left a strict directive that no Callahan family members are permitted in their recovery bay. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have post-op reports to file.""

Vanessa leaned up, kissing Reid’s cheek softly, her voice loud enough for the passing nurses to hear. ""Thank God, Reid. I told you everything would work out. We have to celebrate this miracle tonight. Together.""
