Chapter 5 - The Unmasking

Eleanor stepped to the podium at the front of the ballroom, tapping the microphone with her manicured fingernail. The soft hum through the speakers silenced the remaining murmurs in the room.

""Friends, colleagues, and family,"" Eleanor began, her voice carrying the trademark authority of a Callahan. ""Four months ago, I was facing a death sentence. My kidneys were shutting down, and medical science had run out of conventional options. Tonight, you are all here to celebrate my survival, and to toast my son’s engagement to Vanessa Reed.""

Vanessa beamed, turning to offer a gracious nod to the applauding crowd. She gently rested her palm over Reid's arm, signaling the photographers to lift their lenses.

""However,"" Eleanor continued, her sharp eyes fixing directly on Vanessa with terrifying intensity, ""survival brings clarity. And I despise counterfeit gratitude.""

The room went dead silent. Reid glanced at his mother with sudden alarm. ""Mother, what are you doing?""

Eleanor ignored him entirely. ""For the past four months, the Boston society pages have painted a touching fairy tale. Vanessa Reed let the world believe that she was the angel who orchestrated my salvation. She allowed donors, investors, and social columnists to credit her with giving me the gift of life.""

Vanessa’s face turned from radiant porcelain to the color of chalk. ""Eleanor... you know how much stress that week caused me...""

""Dr. Foster,"" Eleanor commanded. ""Please present the hospital's official certified surgical records.""

Dr. Foster stepped onto the dais, opening the leather attache case. She produced a large, notarized document with the medical seal of Harborline Medical Center displayed clearly on the ballroom’s two giant multimedia screens.

""On October 14th at 8:00 AM,"" Dr. Foster announced clearly, ""Harborline Medical Center performed a successful left-to-right living-donor kidney transplant for Mrs. Eleanor Callahan. The donor was completely compatible, demonstrating a rare six-antigen human leukocyte match.""

Dr. Foster clicked the remote. The document shifted to the certified donor identity registry, signed and sealed under oath.

The name on the screen in massive bold letters was: HANNAH ELIZABETH BROOKS.

Gasps erupted across the room. Several glasses shattered on the marble floor.

Reid Callahan froze, the color draining so violently from his skin that he looked like a corpse. His eyes darted from the screen, to Dr. Foster, and finally to Hannah. The memory of the hospital hallway hit him like a physical blow to the chest: Hannah in her cream sweater, hiding her bruised wrist. Dr. Foster asking for a signature on a donor amendment form. Hannah saying, This has nothing to do with you.

""Hannah..."" Reid choked out, his voice cracking into a ragged whisper. ""You? It was you?""

""Miss Reed,"" Eleanor said coldly into the microphone, ""did not donate an organ. Nor did she arrange for one. Miss Reed ran a four-month PR scam to secure a Callahan wedding ring and inflate her family's failing luxury imports firm.""
