Chapter 8 - The Shadow Comes to Light

The private medical wing of Romano Manor smelled of antiseptic, fresh lilies, and quiet recovery. For three days, Alessandro hovered between life and death as the syndicate’s top surgeons worked around the clock to repair his shattered shoulder and a perforated lung.

During those seventy-two hours, I refused to leave the leather armchair beside his bed. The domestic staff brought fresh clothes, warm tea, and food for Sophie, who spent her afternoons drawing crooked pictures of dinosaurs, rabbits, and a very tall man with gray eyes using crayons Marco had bought for her at the corner store.

Outside the manor walls, the city was undergoing an earthquake. Marco had carried out Alessandro's orders with ruthless efficiency. The federal authorities had raided the Russian syndicate's shipping containers, recovering millions in laundered funds and arresting forty high-ranking capos based on the encrypted files contained within the Bernardo trust.

Elena Romano's resurrection had lasted less than forty-eight hours. The national news channels blared her mugshot across every screen in the country: a fallen socialite facing three consecutive life sentences for domestic terrorism, attempted murder, and high treason.

On the fourth morning, the autumn sunlight broke through the heavy lace curtains, casting golden patterns across the white linen sheets. Sophie was fast asleep on the foot of the bed, curled up like a small kitten around her rabbit.

I sat holding Alessandro's warm, calloused hand, gently tracing the intricate tattoo of a phoenix rising from ash that wrapped around his forearm.

A faint squeeze tightened against my fingers.

My head snapped up. Alessandro's eyelids fluttered, his piercing gray eyes opening slowly, blinking against the gentle morning light. For a moment, he looked disoriented, his gaze sweeping across the ceiling before landing directly on me.

""You're still here,"" he rasped, his voice raw and dry.

A wave of overwhelming relief broke over me, and hot tears spilled down my cheeks before I could wipe them away. ""Of course I'm here. You think I’d leave my boss without a proper two weeks' notice?""

A faint, breathless chuckle rumbled in his chest, making him wince slightly as his stitches pulled. ""I don't think you can quit, Clara. The paperwork is far too complicated.""

He slowly turned his head, spotting Sophie sleeping peacefully at the end of the bed. The lines of tension that had hardened his face for seven long years completely dissolved, leaving behind a handsome, gentle warmth that took my breath away.

""Is the dinosaur still working?"" he whispered.

""The dinosaur saved your life,"" I said softly, reaching out to brush a stray lock of dark hair from his forehead. ""The surgeon said the bullet missed your subclavian artery by less than two millimeters. If you had moved an inch to the left, you wouldn't have survived the tunnel.""

Alessandro looked back at me, his gaze so intense and full of unspoken emotion that my heart hammered against my ribs. ""I didn't move because she was behind me. You were behind me.""

""Alessandro...""

""Listen to me, Clara,"" he said, his voice gaining strength, deep and resonant. ""The Bernardo trust has been officially processed. The federal courts validated the bloodline clause yesterday morning. You are the sole legal inheritor of Don Bernardo’s entire legitimate estate.""

I shook my head, feeling overwhelmed. ""I don't want it. I don't want blood money. I just want a peaceful life for Sophie.""

""It's not blood money,"" Alessandro explained gently, lifting his hand to touch my cheek with heartbreaking tenderness. ""Bernardo transferred his commercial real estate, his clean vineyards in Tuscany, and his maritime charities into that trust before he died. You are an independently wealthy woman, Clara. You have enough to buy a villa in Europe, put Sophie through the finest schools in the world, and never see a man with a gun again.""

My chest tightened painfully. A sudden, sharp terror gripped me—not the terror of bullets, but the terror of losing the man lying in front of me. ""Are you telling me to leave?""

Alessandro’s jaw worked silently for a moment, an agonizing battle raging behind his gray eyes. ""I am telling you that you are free. You don't have to be afraid anymore. You don't owe this house, or me, a single second of your life.""
