Chapter 10 - Where the Roses Bloom Again

Alessandro did not hesitate. Dropping all the calculated restraint he had maintained for thirty-eight years, he caught my face in his large, warm hands and pulled me to him.

His lips met mine in a kiss that erased every shadow, every ounce of grief, and every lingering ghost that had ever haunted the Romano name. It was deep, desperate, and filled with a fierce, protective passion that left me breathless. My hands tangled into his dark hair, pulling him closer, anchoring myself to the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat.

Down by our feet, Sophie let out an exaggerated, theatrical gasp. ""Eww! Mommy! You're kissing my husband!""

Alessandro broke the kiss, resting his forehead against mine, his chest heaving as a deep, magnificent laugh rumbled from his throat. I buried my face in his neck, laughing through my tears as the moving van driver politely turned around and began unloading the trunks back onto the gravel driveway.

""I believe,"" Alessandro murmured, his lips brushing against my temple, ""that the lady has a prior claim on me, Clara.""

""She's three, Alessandro,"" I smiled, wrapping my arms securely around his waist. ""I think her claim expires when she discovers boys who share their chocolate.""

""Then until that day comes,"" Alessandro said, looking down at Sophie with absolute devotion, ""I suppose I'll just have to settle for the mother.""

He turned and extended his hand to Marco, who was watching from the terrace with a broad, unmistakable grin. ""Marco! Unload the car. Tell the legal team to draft the paperwork for the port divestment. We are signing over the operations to the municipal board on Monday.""

Marco blinked, stunned. ""All of it, Boss? You're stepping down from the commission entirely?""

""I'm done running an empire of ghosts,"" Alessandro declared, lifting Sophie effortlessly onto his uninjured shoulder while keeping his other arm locked firmly around my waist. ""From now on, the Romano estate only grows things that can bloom.""

One year later, the courtyard of Romano Manor was unrecognizable.

The cold, imposing iron gates were propped permanently open, welcoming the morning sun across acres of blooming white and red roses. The dark rumors that had once terrified the city had dissolved into stories of the massive charitable foundation operating out of the estate’s east wing, funding orphanages and women's shelters across the state.

Alessandro stood on the terrace, dressed in a sharp navy linen suit, watching the guests assemble on the sprawling lawn below. There were no armed guards in the shadows, no snipers on the parapets. There were only friends, laughter, and the soft strains of a string quartet drifting through the warm summer air.

A small tug at his trousers made him look down.

Sophie, now four years old and wearing a magnificent miniature white lace dress with a crown of baby's breath in her hair, held up a small, familiar object.

""Mister Alessandro,"" she said solemnly. ""I brought your lucky rock.""

Alessandro knelt down, looking resplendent without a single shadow of sadness remaining in his warm gray eyes. He took the smooth little pebble and carefully tucked it into the breast pocket of his jacket, right beside his silk pocket square.

""Thank you, little warrior. Are you ready for your big mission?""

""Yes!"" Sophie beamed, puffing out her chest. ""I get to drop the flower petals! But remember..."" She narrowed her eyes playfully, pointing a tiny finger at his nose just like she had done in the dining room a year ago. ""If you don't kiss Mommy properly, I'm going to marry you instead!""

""It's a deal,"" Alessandro laughed, tapping her nose gently.

The music shifted, the strings swelling into a rich, breathtaking melody.

Alessandro rose to his feet and turned toward the grand French doors of the manor.

The breath caught in his throat, and the crowd fell into a hushed, reverent silence.

I stepped out onto the sunlit terrace, my ivory silk gown trailing softly across the stone. The silver locket was still resting against my collarbone, but beside it hung a delicate platinum band studded with brilliant diamonds.

As our eyes met across the rose-filled courtyard, there were no secrets left between us. No buried debts, no vengeful ghosts, and no fear of the dark.

Alessandro walked down the aisle to meet me, taking my hands in his with a smile that could have outshone the sun.

""You're late, Clara,"" he whispered, his eyes shining with pure, unadulterated happiness.

May you like

""I had to find Sophie's lucky rock,"" I smiled back, my heart overflowing with peace.

""She already gave it to me,"" Alessandro murmured, pulling me close as the minister raised his hands to begin. ""I've been lucky since the moment you both walked through my door."""
