Chapter 5 - Poison in the Vineyard

The darkness in the reinforced suite was absolute, thick as velvet and heavy as lead. Within half a second, the emergency red backup strips along the baseboards flickered to life, bathing the room in a dull, bloody crimson glow. Alessandro’s firearm was out before the lights had completely died.

""They cut the main auxiliary grid,"" Alessandro whispered, his voice dangerously calm. ""They’re using military-grade frequency jammers. Marco can’t reach me on the comms.""

From the bed, Sophie let out a soft whimper. ""Mommy? Is the sun broken?""

""No, sweetie,"" I said instantly, crossing the room on trembling legs and gathering her warm, sleepy body into my arms. ""The lights just went off for a little nap. Mister Alessandro is right here with us.""

""Is he going to use the T-Rex?"" Sophie asked, rubbing her eyes against my shoulder.

Alessandro stepped silently to the door, pressing his ear against the cold ballistic steel. He didn't answer Sophie, but his posture was that of a predator coiled to strike. ""They didn't blow the door,"" he murmured to himself. ""If they had thermite, they would have breached five minutes ago. Elena knows this room was designed by her own father's engineers. There’s only one way to flush someone out of an airtight panic room.""

My heart plummeted into my stomach. ""The air vents.""

""The filtration system runs through the old wine cellar below the east wing,"" Alessandro said, spinning around. ""She’s going to pump carbon monoxide or an incapacitating agent through the ductwork. We have less than ten minutes before the oxygen levels drop to zero.""

""What do we do?"" Panic clawed at my throat, threatening to choke me. I squeezed Sophie so tightly she let out a small protest. ""If we open that door, her men will shoot us down!""

""There is an egress tunnel behind the master fireplace,"" Alessandro said, already moving toward the massive marble mantelpiece across the room. He reached into the carved stone mouth of a roaring lion and pulled down a hidden iron lever with a violent wrench.

With a low groan of grinding stone, the entire back hearth of the fireplace slid inward on hidden steel tracks, revealing a narrow, descending spiral staircase cut directly into the ancient limestone foundation. The air wafting up smelled of damp earth, aged oak barrels, and moss.

""This tunnel leads three hundred yards through the hillside, opening into the lower vineyard near the maintenance sheds,"" Alessandro explained rapidly, taking Sophie’s small woolen coat and wrapping it securely around her shoulders. ""Once we reach the sheds, I have an armored SUV hidden beneath the floorboards. We can reach the state line in two hours.""

""Will Marco be there?"" Sophie asked innocently, looking up at him. ""Marco promised to show me the big tractors.""

Alessandro’s jaw tightened. ""Marco is a warrior, Sophie. He will meet us at the rendezvous point.""

I looked into Alessandro’s eyes and saw the terrible truth he was keeping from my daughter: Marco was likely holding the line at the cost of his own life.

We hurried into the narrow stone throat of the passage. Alessandro led the way, a high-powered tactical flashlight mounted under the barrel of his Kimber casting a sharp white beam down the uneven steps. I followed closely behind, carrying Sophie against my hip, her arms locked securely around my neck. The air grew colder with every step, the distant sounds of gunfire replaced by the heavy drip of subterranean moisture.

We had descended nearly fifty feet into the earth when the flashlight beam suddenly caught something bright on the stone floor ahead.

Alessandro stopped so abruptly that I bumped into his broad back.

Lying in the center of the wet stone path was a single, long-stemmed white rose—freshly cut, its petals glistening with dew. Beside it lay an antique gold cigarette lighter engraved with the Romano crest.

Alessandro didn't move. His breathing went entirely still.

From the dark curve of the tunnel ahead, a soft, mocking laugh echoed off the damp limestone walls.

""Did you really think I didn't remember your little escape hatch, darling?"" Elena Romano's voice drifted through the gloom, silky, cold, and dripping with poison. ""You designed this tunnel for me on our wedding night. How poetic that you’ve brought my little replacement straight into my parlor.""
