Chapter 1 - The Face Behind the Glass

The morning mist still clung to the limestone terraces of the Romano estate, turning the sprawling courtyard into a sea of cold gray. My voice cracked as my scream echoed off the stone walls, tearing through the quiet dawn. Sophie’s small fingers tightened around mine, her lucky pebble forgotten in the dirt. Up on the second-story balcony, Alessandro Romano stood like a carved statue, but the sheer panic in his posture made my blood run ice-cold.
Behind him, emerging slowly from the thick shadows of the heavy velvet drapes, was a silhouette that defied everything I understood about reality. The woman wore an ivory silk dressing gown, her honey-blonde hair falling across sharp, aristocratic cheekbones. For seven years, the portrait hanging in the private gallery had depicted those exact striking green eyes. It was Elena Romano—the woman Alessandro had supposedly buried in a sealed marble vault after a car bomb incinerated her limousine.
Elena’s lips curved into an unsettling, razor-thin smile. She placed a slender hand upon Alessandro’s broad shoulder. Through the double-paned glass, I watched the most dangerous syndicate boss in the eastern seaboard flinch as if burned by a white-hot brand. He did not pull his custom silver-plated Kimber 1911 from his shoulder holster. He simply stood paralyzed, his eyes locked onto mine down in the gravel driveway with an agonizing mixture of fury, helplessness, and raw terror.
""Mommy,"" Sophie whispered, tugging insistently on my coat sleeve. ""The pretty lady with the yellow hair is waving at me. Is she the sad mister's sister?""
""Don't look, Sophie,"" I choked out, pulling my daughter behind my knees as Marco hurried toward us.
The burly head of security gripped my shoulder with an urgency that bruised my collarbone. His tanned face was completely drained of color. ""Clara, get the girl inside the gatehouse right now. Do not look back at the main house. Do not speak to anyone on the radios.""
""Marco, that's impossible,"" I breathed, trembling so violently my teeth clattered together. ""Elena died in the blast down on Route 9. I was hired by the housekeeper three months ago, but everyone knows the story! Alessandro waged a three-year war against the Moretti cartel to avenge her death! Who is that standing in his private suite?""
""You don't know the half of it, Clara,"" Marco muttered under his breath, drawing a heavy semi-automatic handgun from beneath his tailored jacket and racking the slide with a crisp metallic snap. ""Elena Romano never died. She was the one who placed the bomb beneath the floorboards.""
A cold wind swept across the open courtyard, carrying the distant rumble of the iron gates grinding shut. The electronic locks clicked with a heavy, final thud. We were trapped on the grounds. Marco ushered us through a narrow service door into the cold brick interior of the security outbuilding, his eyes constantly scanning the high stone walls.
Sophie sat down on a leather bench, completely unaware of the mortal danger humming around her, and carefully smoothed the fur on her worn plush rabbit. ""Mister Alessandro likes my rock,"" she declared happily, her bright blue eyes shining with childlike innocence. ""He's going to play tea party with Barnaby later.""
My chest seized with a terrifying realization. If Elena Romano had returned from the dead, she had not come back to resume a loving marriage. She had returned to an empire Alessandro had rebuilt from blood, bone, and iron. And by walking into his breakfast room, sitting in his chair, and cracking the frozen armor around his scarred heart, my innocent little daughter had painted a giant target directly onto her own back.

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany door of the outbuilding flew open with a deafening crash, slamming against the brick wall. Heavy combat boots echoed on the threshold, and the smell of expensive tobacco and rain entered the room.
Alessandro Romano stepped inside, his shirt collar open, his dark hair disheveled, and his piercing gray eyes burning with a wild, dangerous fire.
