Chapter 3 - The Secret in the East Wing

My hand flew to my chest, my fingertips digging into the worn silver casing of the oval locket. The chill in the room suddenly felt suffocating. ""Nobody told me to apply here! An agency in downtown posted an opening for residential staff. I was three months behind on rent, Sophie was sick with bronchitis, and the agency offered room and board. It was a lifeline!""

Alessandro didn't blink. He reached out with one gloved hand, his long fingers stopping an inch short of touching the locket. ""Open it, Clara.""

""It's just an old photograph of my mother,"" I stammered, pulling back slightly. ""She was a seamstress. She died when I was barely eighteen.""

""Open it,"" Alessandro repeated, his voice carrying the quiet, absolute authority that made hardened men fall to their knees.

Swallowing the lump in my throat, I unclasped the delicate, tarnished chain with shaking fingers. My thumb found the small notch on the side of the silver oval and popped the latch open. Inside, behind a scratched piece of plastic, sat the tiny, faded black-and-white picture of my mother when she was a young woman in Naples. Beneath the yellowed paper, however, was something I had never noticed in my entire life—a tiny, micro-engraved brass plate set directly into the filigree silver backing.

Alessandro leaned in, his gray eyes narrowing as he read the microscopic numbers etched into the brass. A bitter, humorless chuckle vibrated in his broad chest. ""Seven-four-two-nine. Just as I thought.""

""What does that mean?"" I demanded, tears of frustration and confusion stinging my eyes. ""What does my mother's jewelry have to do with your dead wife?""

""Elena wasn't an only child,"" Alessandro explained, turning to Marco, who immediately moved to guard the window blinds. ""Her father, Don Bernardo, had a child with a woman who worked in his private villa thirty years ago. When his legitimate daughter Elena was born, Bernardo cast the woman and her illegitimate baby out into the streets with a modest trust fund and a promise: if the main family line ever collapsed into ruin, the illegitimate branch would inherit the core assets held in the Swiss accounts.""

The room seemed to tilt beneath my feet. The floor felt unstable, like thin ice cracking under winter boots. ""No... that's impossible. My mother was an honest woman. She worked fourteen hours a day at an alteration shop. She never mentioned the Bernardo family. She never spoke of the mob.""

""Because she was trying to save your life,"" Alessandro said softly, stepping closer. For the first time, his gaze held something resembling profound regret. ""Elena found out about you eight years ago. She realized that if anything happened to her father or his legitimate heirs, fifty million dollars and control of the port shipping routes would bypass her entirely and transfer to you. That's why she staged the car bombing. She wanted the world to think she was dead so she could operate from the shadows, systematically hunting down every loose end before reappearing to claim the empire.""

Before I could process the monstrous weight of his words, the sharp rattle of automatic gunfire ripped through the morning air from the east side of the mansion.

Sophie shrieked, dropping her stuffed rabbit on the floor and throwing her little arms around my knees. ""Mommy! The thunder is too loud!""

Alessandro moved with terrifying, instantaneous speed. In one fluid motion, he drew his Kimber 1911, swept Sophie up into the crook of his powerful left arm, and caught my wrist with his right hand, pulling me hard against his chest. ""Marco! Initiate Protocol Omega! Burn the lower tunnels and rally the outer perimeter guards at the gatehouse!""

""On it, Boss!"" Marco yelled, sprinting out into the courtyard with his weapon drawn.

""Listen to me, Clara,"" Alessandro commanded, his face inches from mine, his voice steady as iron despite the chaotic violence erupting outside. ""The ghost in the window wasn't here to haunt me. Elena came here because she realized you were hired into this house three weeks ago. She thinks I brought you here on purpose to cut her out forever.""

""Did you?"" I whispered, clutching his tailored lapels as gunfire shattered the glass upstairs in the main house.

May you like

Alessandro looked down at Sophie, who buried her tear-streaked face into the crook of his neck, her tiny arms clinging to his broad shoulders without an ounce of hesitation.

""No,"" Alessandro whispered back, his gray eyes burning with fierce, protective fury. ""I hired you because I thought you were just an innocent mother who needed an honest job. But I swear on my life, neither Elena nor the entire Moretti family will lay a finger on either of you.""
