Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

The reinforced bunker on the third floor was not a dusty cellar, but a master suite disguised behind solid oak paneling and sheets of ballistic tungsten. The heavy steel door sealed behind us with an airtight hiss that muffled the distant sounds of carnage below. Outside, sirens wailed in the valley, their high-pitched screams drowned out by the muffled thuds of controlled breaching charges detonating along the garden perimeter.
Sophie had finally cried herself to sleep on the massive king-sized bed, exhausted by the terror of the morning. Alessandro had carefully laid her down, taking the time to tuck her battered plush rabbit beneath her arm with hands that had ended dozens of lives. Watching that massive, terrifying man gently pull a cashmere blanket over a three-year-old girl created a bizarre ache in my chest that I couldn't comprehend.
""Drink this,"" Alessandro ordered quietly, handing me a crystal tumbler filled with two fingers of amber bourbon.
""I don't drink,"" I replied, sitting stiffly on the edge of a leather armchair, my fingers locked together in my lap to stop them from shaking.
""Drink it anyway,"" he murmured, his tone leaving no room for argument. ""Shock will set in within ten minutes if you don't shock your system back to reality.""
I took a tiny sip. The liquid burned like liquid fire down my throat, but it immediately pushed back the cold nausea that had been rising from my stomach. ""How many men did she bring?""
""Enough to stage a small military coup,"" Alessandro replied, walking over to a bank of hidden security monitors embedded into a mahogany bookshelf. The black-and-white screens flickered, showing armed men in tactical gear patrolling the lower terrace. ""Elena has been backed by the Russian syndicate in the north for seven years. They financed her disappearance. In exchange, she promised them forty percent of the port facilities once she liquidated me and claimed her father's trust.""
""And what happens when she finds out Sophie and I are in here?""
Alessandro stopped rewiring a feed on the console and turned to look at me. In the dim ambient light of the monitors, the sharp angles of his jaw and the jagged scar cutting across his left cheekbone looked lethal. ""She won't get past that door. Not while I have breath in my lungs.""
""Why are you protecting us like this?"" I asked, looking up into his piercing gray eyes. ""You don't owe me anything. You could hand over the locket, hand over the codes, and negotiate a truce with your wife. You could save your empire.""
Alessandro took a slow step forward, towering over my chair. ""Elena was never my wife in spirit, Clara. It was an arranged alliance between two warring families that my father forced upon me when I was twenty-five. I tried to honor it. I tried to build a life. And when she told me she was pregnant seven years ago, I swore I would lay down my guns and turn this empire legitimate so my child would never have to live in the shadows.""
His voice cracked slightly—a microscopic fracture in an otherwise impenetrable suit of armor.
""She wasn't pregnant,"" he whispered, the sheer venom and grief in his words chilling the air between us. ""It was a fabrication. A psychological trick to ensure I wouldn't suspect her when the car bomb was planted. She wanted me broken, drowned in grief, unable to lead, so the families would tear each other apart while she waited overseas.""
He reached out, his calloused thumb gently grazing my cheekbone, catching a stray tear I hadn't realized had fallen. The touch was startlingly warm, sending an unexpected jolt of electricity through my veins.
""For seven years, I lived in a mausoleum,"" Alessandro said, his gaze searching my face with an intensity that made it difficult to breathe. ""I was dead inside, Clara. A ghost walking through empty halls, waiting for an assassin's bullet to finally end the monotony of breathing. And then this morning, a tiny girl with strawberry jam on her chin marched up to my table, called me sad, and told me she was going to marry me.""
A tiny, breathless laugh escaped my lips before I could stop it. ""Sophie has no filter. Her preschool teacher told me she tried to adopt the school bus driver last month.""
May you like
""She made me laugh,"" Alessandro murmured, his eyes dropping to my mouth for a fleeting, electrifying second before returning to my eyes. ""Do you have any idea what it feels like to laugh after seven years in a grave? It feels like breathing underwater. And I will burn this entire city to the ground before I let anyone snuff that light out.""
Before I could answer, the security monitors suddenly flared with bright, violent static. The internal power hum stuttered, and the lights plunged into total, suffocating darkness.
