Chapter 9 - The Altar of Truth

Downstairs in the Grand Ballroom, four hundred guests were growing increasingly restless. The orchestra had repeated the bridal chorus three times, and Eleanor Cross was furiously demanding answers from the venue manager. The national television cameras swiveled toward the back doors as they finally swung open.

Ethan Calder walked down the center aisle alone.

He was not walking toward his bride. His posture was tall, commanding, and radiating absolute power. Behind him walked Nora Bennett, holding little Sophie’s hand.

The ballroom fell into dead, suffocating silence. The music abruptly cut off. Eleanor Cross rushed toward the center aisle, her face flushed with fury. ""Ethan! What is the meaning of this circus? Where is Madeline? The live broadcast has already begun!""

Ethan stopped at the foot of the altar, turned toward the crowd, and picked up the wireless microphone from the bewildered officiant. His voice echoed through the magnificent acoustics of the Plaza, steady and devoid of fear.

""Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests,"" Ethan announced, looking directly into the television lenses. ""There will be no wedding today. Five minutes ago, I discovered that my fiancée, Madeline Cross, and my best man, Julian Vance, have been engaged in an elaborate conspiracy to commit corporate fraud and embezzlement against the Calder Family Trust.""

A collective, deafening gasp ripped through the four hundred guests. Eleanor Cross turned ghostly white, clutching her chest before collapsing into the arms of a nearby senator.

""Alder Crest’s legal counsel has already notified the District Attorney’s office,"" Ethan continued coldly, completely unfazed by the uproar erupting around him. ""I apologize for wasting your afternoon, but the bar is open, the dinner is paid for, and I invite all of you to celebrate the best transaction I have ever made in my life: walking away from a lie.""

Ethan lowered the microphone, handed it back to the priest, and turned away from the spectacle. He knelt down before Sophie, gently smoothing her hair. ""You ready to go home, princess?""

Sophie nodded eagerly, wrapping her arms around his neck. ""Can Miss Nora come with us, Daddy?""

Ethan looked up. Nora was standing at the edge of the altar, watching him with admiration and profound relief. The storm had broken, the truth had triumphed, and for the first time in five long years, Ethan Calder looked truly, completely free.

""Yes, Sophie,"" Ethan said softly, his eyes locked onto Nora’s. ""I think Miss Nora is coming with us.""
